Is there any recommended way to clean out an intercooler, oil deposits etc.

Yes, remove it and flush it out with petrol, maybe do that a few times will help disolve the oil. Then give a flush with water, let it dry and bobs your uncle.

Also its a good time to give the front a clean and check the cooling vanes are not too damaged, straighten them as required remove bugs etc.

Landrover supply a dedicated solvent for cleaning out their intercoolers but personally I have used cellulose thinners sucessfully. I suppose you might have to be carefull if the intercooler has any plastic componenents but the one on my landrover is all aluminium.

I would avoid using water as it is a lot harder to dry than a light petrochemical. perhaps some gentle heat would aid drying( maybe put it on top of the central heating boiler)
