Intermittent intermittent wiper

Not a typo . . .

Sometimes my intermittent setting works fine. Sometimes it doesn't work, other times it works for a while then stops. I am assuming a poor connection somewhere , but any thoughts as to where?

It could be poor connections on the relay or the mechanism could do with being lubricated

Sounds like relay with a broken solder joint/bad connection, looks like this… http://www.justanswer.com/mercedes/229x1-hi-just-bought-second-hand-1991-sl-500-the-wiper-does.html
You could wait until the fault reoccurs then try moving the relay from side to side to see if moving the relay cures the fault, this might help confirm that the relay is/is not at fault.

Please remember that if the mechanism need lubricating, the current passing through the relay that drives the wiper increases, damaging the relay
