Hi firstly I'm new to site and would like to introduce my self, I'm from just south of Bristol and have for past 10 years owned and maintained a w124 E300 diesel estate in silver. What a car love it every time I get in it its better than prosac!

Unfortunatly shes not well leaking water very slowly from head gasket behing exhaust manifold, I am in process of stripping to fit new head gasket and would appreciate if any one can help with following

- once I break timming chain how can I keep injector pump from moving and loosing timing position?
- can any one advise the head bolt torque settings, I note there are two differant bolt types that I have currently on order?

Hope someone can help, I have a haynes manual for the 124 but its doesent cover 24v engine.

Many Thanks :)
Regards
Frankie

Are you 100% sure the cylinder head gasket is leaking?

AFAIK there's a 4 mm hole in the back of the IP and you can lock the IP in position using a 4 mm drift or drill through this hole with the engine at TDC

I wouldn't underestimate the complexity of the job and the need for specialist tools

I would definitely have the head stripped, crack tested & skimmed before replacement and I'd definitely have the valves ground in - you may well find a couple of exhaust valves not sealing properly

I'd also definitely fit new MB head gasket, bolts, timing chain, timing chain tensioner and glowplugs. I'd also have the injectors retipped, replace the leakoff pipes and the black T-pieces for the air system and clean the entire inlet system of gunge. Also make sure the vacuum system is free of blockages and make sure the wiring to the temperature sensor hasn't degraded

Be careful with the cams - it's possible to snap them when being removed. On the petrol cars it's also possible to snap the cams if the tensioner is not refitted correctly

Afterwards I'd probably disable the EGR system

If you have a PC you can buy access to the MB WIS system and parts database. This would make the job easier
