ipod question

I've just DIY fitted a official MB ipod kit to my W203 2006 C180 Estate fitted with an audio 20 cd, however I now have two problems 1. my previously working Audio buttons on the steering wheel and the Audio menu display in the dash have stopped working. 2. When i connect my ipod using the Aux function it plays but sound is only on the passenger side speakers, i've tried adjusting the balance but this seems to have no affect, the radio and cd are working fine however.

Are these issues all caused by the need to get the ipod steering wheel control features enable by Star at a dealer?

You have to code it up in the cluster, its far from plug and play!!
