IRREGULAR TICKOVER ON MY 1994 MERCEDES E300D

During the Winter months when starting from cold the engine hunts. However slight pressure on the accelerator for 2-3 seconds and the idle becomes constant around 600 rpm. In the Summer months this problem does not occur. Any ideas please.
