Car is a 2016 e 220D cabriolet.

I was taught to drive by my father who was a long distance HGV driver in the 1950's - this is how he did it then and subsequently in his cars and myself since 1972. Annoying if i cannot do as a very good way of parking in tight places. BTW my dad could park a large Foden eight legger plus trailer w/o power steering in some incredibly difficult locations.

The later cars will shift to park when you open the door, but if you put your foot on the brake and reselect drive or reverse with the door open you should be able to continue the manoever. It’s done to protect you from falling out or damaging the door. Or both, you never know ;)

Thanks and will try your advice - cars getting too clever by far! Had my TR4 for 43 years and never fell out of it yet!

Yes, but the quality of drivers hasn’t improved over the years ;)

They never will Uncle Benz, with all the 'I'll drive your car for you technology' the old skilled drivers are a vintage species now.
I years to come the new now drivers will be so stumped if they were told to drive a 100 year old car......Hmmm. a bit like 60's plus driving trying to cope with a 1909 Renault
That's technology for you
