This is my first post! Recently smashed up my 1983 500SEL and done a load of damage to the front end. Is it worth me putting in for repair or is a write off?? If i do repair it, where is the best place and more importantly the cheapest??

Any advice would be good

it's really difficult to judge without photos ... but i would say that most insurers would write the car off as a matter of course. if the car was in *pristine* condition, and you were in possession of an agreed value certificate, then you would have some room for bargain with the insurers. otherwise, i'd say pretty much the car is not going to go back on the road - because front end damage often brings into play some very expensive components.

I thought the previous answer you got covered it pretty comprehensively..

If there is a "load of damage" it will be uneconomical to repair it.

Is it insured fully comp? if so you will have very little say in whether or not it's classed as a write off - some insurance companies will negotiate and some won't - it's a matter of seeing what they say

If it's not insured fully comp then you'll no doubt be better off looking for another car. Not sure what your '83 is worth but I've seen later ones for sale at sensible prices. That would probably cost you less than the price of the parts to rebuild your damaged one never mind the labour.
