Evening all

I am again in need of picking on some brains that possess a high level of intellect! (is that enough brown-nosing?)

i bought my e280 in feb this year with less than 5000 miles. the car was registered in aug 2008 by the actual dealer who used it as a demo/boss's car.

the car currently has 5600 miles on it and is around 9 months old. for 14 days its been saying Service A is overdue.

the dealer said i would not have to service it for around 10,000 miles or two years whichever comes first.

so can someone please explain whats going on here?

many many thanks as always

I think that the service indicator has been set wrong so that it goes in annually rather than the 2 year plan

Please see this very good post from Hawk 20

Many people have become upset by this move to get more cars into the workshop, and that includes me.

We ar in a day and age where the oil is good for say 16k miles, and nothing else will happen to a car that is not used much, and the 2 year plan was perfect for me.

Maybe someone else will come in on this post

The dealer misled you and he should pay for the service. Here's your ammo.:-
Cars produced in 2006 onwards have servicing at fixed intervals. Some like it. Low mileage people don't. The rule is 15,500 miles or once a year whichever is the sooner.

When the car is sold and registered they should set it with STAR, while doing the PDI, so as to start the one year interval from the date of first registration. If they forget to do this, it will count down to one year from the date of build, which can be several months before first registration.

Your dealer must know this. If an employee made the mistake, copy this to him.

As for the other comments above. There is lots of correspondence in the Forum on this topic.

I had the identical problem with a pre-registered W 203 in 2008. The dealer will reset the ASSYST system to the anniversary of registration (not build as yours is probably set to) and that will give you some relief, but they say that they can not vary it beyond that.

Don't go too long before you go back and get the dealer to give you a free service (for misleading you) or you will infringe the 3 year warranty.

Absolutely. Get it in sharpish, otherwise you could have a warranty fight on your hands. Its one you should win but you don't need the argument. I believe the limit is 30 days/1000 miles over but don't hold me to this.

Greetings all

I am now sitting in the dealership at Mercedes Direct Park Royal

After some mild argey-bargey they offred to do the A service free of charge!

also, while i was sitting here, i noticed a postr saying Rear Parking Sensors fitted for £299! instead of £500 so theyre fitting them now too!

a huge thankyou to hawk, jberks, alex and malcolm for telling me to pursue this!

regards

Nice to see a dealer co-operating too. BTW I saw your car in the gallery and I like your interior combo very much, I'd have chosen the exact same but so few do. If you ever want to sell it...

It can be altered at any time or mileage. I had a car in which had an MB service at 33k & was then sold soon afterwards. The new owner brought the car in for a service at 36K & showing -3000 overdue for service .... obviously not reset at 33K & not needing a service yet. Via Star, I could reset the counter back in mileage & work out the difference in days. Customer well chuffed. He'll be back when it IS due.:D

We had the same problem with our current Merc. It was 9mths old when we bought it and had only done 150 miles and we were told it wouldn't need a service till it had done 10,000 miles. However we eventually found out it was indeed due for a service after 1 year regardless of mileage and the dealership were very good about it and let us take it to our local MB dealer and they picked up the bill.
