hi guys, i'm considering buying this 1999 W202 kombi, with 280,000 kilometres (173983 miles) on the clock.

is that way too high of a mileage (petrol) or should the engine still be ok ??

what should I look out for on a car with that mileage ?

cheers

all down to price.
If you reckon that 200k is getting towards the limits on a petrol engine, how close are you in terms of time.
At the end of the day it also depends greatly on it's life and maintenance. After all, a well maintained motor that's spent all it's time on the motorway may be almost unworn at 250k whereas a poorly maintaned town car could be shot at 90k.
Drive it and listen to it carefully and judge it on that rather than what the clock says. Any rattles or whines and walk away.

254000 miles and still going strong

i although being a recent owner of my 230te (w124) i am thoroughly impressed at just how well it is still running , using no oil or water , and all this after doing 254000 miles , bodywork is still good although the lacquer was peeling on the bonnet, (since resprayed) but engine and gearbox still working great.......i must have either been really lucky, or its true what they say ..and that is quaility shows....whole car has costs me less than 400 pounds....

Take off the oil filler cap and see if there is any blow back when the engine is running, let it idle, for a few mins, then rev it up and look for smokey exhaust.
try and hear it start up from cold to see how much rattle with the timing chain in the front of engine
