Is there any way to register a new keeper of a car and simultaneously put a private reg on it? The dealer I bought from suggested it was, but I've not found a suitable form yet....

No....I believe you will need to wait for the new V5 to arrive with the change of owner then the change of number can be done instantly online.

In my experience, it takes about five days for the new V5 to arrive.
As Ron says (once you have the magic 16 digits on your new V5) the changeover is instant on line.
You can have number plates made up earlier, using the retention certificate. Don’t forget your passport or picture driving licence.
