Recall conserning Sprinter passenger and commercial vans 2017_2022

A12/01863/22

A component of the parking lock system may wear out. As a result, the vehicle may begin to move out of parking position, increasing the risk of an accident.
The product does not comply with the Regulation on the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.

pretty sure the law is for a parking brake.... the term parking lock, I think would infer the pawl in the auto box, but then it doesn't need to work as its not the bit at the start of the sentence

any red text below is an addition by me, the rest is the UK construction and use regs - bold just for emphasis

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/schedule/3/made

The parking brake shall be so designed and constructed that—
(a)

in the case of a wheeled heavy motor car or motor car, its means of operation is independent of the means of operation of any split braking system with which the vehicle is fitted;
(b)

in the case of a motor vehicle other than a motor cycle or an invalid carriage, either—
(i)

it is capable of being applied by direct mechanical action without the intervention of any hydraulic, electric or pneumatic device; or
(ii) WOW so NO electronic parking brake is actually legal in the UK ?

the vehicle complies with requirement 15; and
(c)

it can at all times when the vehicle is not being driven or is left unattended be set so as—
(i)

in the case of a track-laying vehicle, to lock the tracks; and
(ii)

in the case of a wheeled vehicle, to prevent the rotation of at least one wheel in the case of a three wheeled vehicle and at least two wheels in the case of a vehicle with more than three wheels.
17 The parking brake shall be capable of being set so as effectively to prevent two at least of the wheels from revolving when the trailer is not being drawn.
18

The parking brake shall be so designed and constructed that—

(a) in the case of a motor vehicle, its means of operation (whether multi-pull or not) is independent of the means of operation of any braking system required by regulation 18 to have a total braking efficiency of not less than 50%; and

(b) in the case of a trailer, its brakes can be applied and released by a person standing on the ground by a means of operation fitted to the trailer; and

(c) in either case, its braking force (there is NO braking force in an automatic gearbox's parking pawl - all it effectively does is stick screw driver in the gears when stationary to jam it up), when the vehicle is not being driven or is left unattended (and in the case of a trailer, whether the braking force is applied by the driver using the service brakes of the drawing vehicle or by a person standing on the ground in the manner indicated in sub-paragraph (b)) can at all times be maintained in operation by direct mechanical action without the intervention of any hydraulic, electric or pneumatic device and, when so maintained, can hold the vehicle stationary on a gradient of at least 16% without the assistance of stored energy.

The stipulation is the force must be maintained mechanically without intervention of electrics etc., when the vehicle is not in use i.e, after the brake has been applied. It doesn't state how the brake can be applied...

oh dear and another regulation making the auto box park unsuitable

in the case of a wheeled vehicle, to prevent the rotation of at least one wheel in the case of a three wheeled vehicle and at least two wheels in the case of a vehicle with more than three wheels.

as a diff is open (as it is on all cars - as even a LSD isn't locked up to 30% unless power is applied) ..it actually can't hold ANY wheels still - if enough grip on the axel PARK is in operation upon it "should stop the vehicle moving" but either wheel is fully capable of being turned any amount at any point
