My EGR shunt has been in place trouble free and running perfectly for over 3,000 miles now...
A couple of weeks back i thought "I know, I'll just remove the EGR and look at my pipes" (as you do)..
I could swear they were noticeably less clogged up with gunge..
Yes they were oily but there seemed to be a lot less crud than there was..
Is it possible that the gradual oil mist sort of loosens the much and its gradually swallowed by the engine?
Or chemically does this just not happen?
Before you say "Impossible".. Here is the latest photo of my EGR valve...
Note the lack of Black chloresterol...:)
Notice the original photo.. That was with only 41,000 miles on !!

You are incredible Simon, the only man in history that takes his EGR valve out once a month to polish it, good on you :D

You are only showing the egr valve, Simon. That has been closed for the last 3000 miles and, since you cleaned it before you "shunted", it has stayed clean. The place to look would be inside the manifold itself to see if any of the crud has gone. Can't really see that the oil would remove it, to be honest. I cleaned mine thoroughly throughout before "shunting" so mine will still be pristine, I hope:)

I would guess Millers, if used, might shift some gunge ??

I wonder why Simon devotes all that time on the EGR valve when the 02 sensor is crying out for a little bit of love and attention, and he has 2 of these ;):D

so, that's what's causing it then ..............

Its named "the shed" for a reason.

When I had the first inlet port shut off motor fail due to oil leaking from the turbo, only the motor was failed. The manifold could well have seen better days (by 49k) it has plenty of time to fill with EGR desposits and oil from the leaking seal.

MB Warranty replaced the motor and the issue went away.

Speaking with Olly at PCS (who I trust a lot) he reckoned to cure it, time for a new manifold, motor, the works as he has never seen one of his back. Crockers on the other forum is on motor number 4, but same manifold.

Hopefully this fix fully cures the problem. The linkages are were badly worn and the flaps gummed up to the extent a new manifold was needed.

This, from a brief bit of Audi A6 research, is common on the V6 TDi with needing replacement manifolds, and BMWs lump is not immune either.

I never noticed a lack of power in the car, until it completely went. I thought with a clogged intake manifold, power would slowly die off, maybe it did but it always felt a fast car in my tenure.

I use millers routinely. I am on port motor number 3, and manifold number 2.

Haha, good old ST4..
I dont think you are destined for the advertizing dept at Millers..:D
