Is White the new Black/Silver. My Father and a friend have just purchased a CLS in White!. Just past a Merc dealer with a new C Class on display in White, and even the local Ford Dealer is displaying the new shape Mondeo in white. White is great when new and shiny, but looks tied and tatty after a few years if not carefully looked after. Just reminds me of all those 80's white XR3i's/GTI's with rear bumpers stained with exhaust fumes etc. Never liked it. Never will. http://i9.tinypic.com/6g2k55j.jpg

We have a white Saab 9-5. There are lots of white cars around now - saw a Golf and I think, an Astra last week. Definitely back in.

I agree. If looked after, White is a great colour. Got a mate with a 420SEC in white and it still looks great. However still remember all the Nissan's/Toyota's/Ford's and Vauxhall's of the 80's with peeling bumpers and exhaust stained rear's etc. Must be on it's way back. Just seen a TV Ad for the new C Class. And it's white !

Guys,
I am a member of the audi forum, & yes white cars are making a comeback.
Lots of debate and photos of S3's and RS4's in white. Prefer silver or black personally.

You're right, even here in Norfolk the new C Class display model is white. The dealer even said that they were surprised when it came in, but have had a great deal of interest, particularly in "White"

The shape of the car makes a big difference as to how it looks in a certain color

I agree with Television. We (girlfriend) have a white Beetle for 5 years now. It's the only colour for it - shows off the shape really well. I'm glad white is making a comeback - it might be part of the 'bling' show-off culture we seem to be immersed in at the mo.

And as far as 'looking tatty' after a while - I think any colour will appear tatty without some looking after. Black can be particularly bad in this regard (the loss of the sheen can be very noticable) - silver might be the colour least affected though.

Silver is a great choice. It makes even older cars look pretty modern. When I was buying a TE back in 1990 I set my heart on a silver one. They were hard to find. Most were in drab colours like ivory white or non metallic blue/burgundy/green etc. Silver was not the number one choice for a Merc's in the 80's. How many W123's/W126's or even 190's do you see in silver. And you have to remember that in the late 90's every other Merc you saw was blue/black.

In the eighties I had a white car, it was very difficult to keep clean. If you washed it and then went out, it always showed dirt marks thrown up from the tyres around the wheel arches and lower door areas. Although the rest of the car was spotless, it just looked as if it needed another wash. I vowed never to buy a white car again.

I have hired various white cars in Florida on holiday, and they seem to stay clean for 2 weeks. It obviously depends on the climate and/or how dirty our roads are.

I have just traded a black car in for the MB, same story, always washed and kept clean, always looks like it needs another wash. Never again.

MB is Iridium Silver, even when dirt is visible close up, it still looks clean if you stand back a few feet. That explains the poularity of silver cars on our roads.

I think white is about the only colour I would never ever consider buying a car in. It's just so 70's in my opinion.

Me too. I guess it's all down to personal preference but I would not want white (or red, unless it was a Ferrari!). My last few cars have alternated - light/dark. I've never had a silver one but I've had a shiny blue C class followed by a dark green C class followed by a bronzey/champagne E class and now have an Obsidian Black E class. Agree with the comments about the darker cars being harder to keep clean but when they are polished up they really sparkle.

Was driving along yesterday and came up behind a "Bentley" .... but somehow it did not look quite right even though it had the big Bentley winged badge on the boot. As I drew closer at the traffic lights I saw if was a 300C badged as a Bentley. What gave it away? The colour ...... dark blue ...... didn't even look metallic just plain dark blue. A real Bentley has deep gloss paintwork but this one was very dull and was the giveaway.

People have been using badge's to upgrade entry level cars to the top spec for years. How many BMW's did you see with the M badge on the back. One look at the tail pipe and you know it's a cooking 1.8. However, to badge a Chrysler as a Bentley really Should be a criminal offence. Owner really must have an ego to satisfy. Once sat behind a Ford Sierra which was badged as follows. SIERRA 2.8i Ghia X Special Edition 4x4 Cosworth. Badge took up half the bootlid!

Either 70's or wedding car, especially if it's a Mercedes.

I have just come back from Arizona USA today and was amazed at all the white cars, especially Mercedes. I guess it is maybe to do with the heat. I must say GL's, CL's and SLk's look great in this colour

I have not seen one yet in the flesh but I assume these C class`s are not your bog standard, or Tranny white but some upper class pearlescent or shimmer flake finish. Is it in tribute to Elvis who has the 40th anniversary of his death in August
