Thanks to all for your suggestions and pointers to look for.
As the car is 2002 there's rust all over it on virtually every panel except wings that previous owner had changed - lucky me!
Couldn't care less what it looks like, its a working wagon carrying pinballs in luxury & style - what well built cars these are, and a joy to drive every time.
Have used black carpet tape to see if leak stops or reduces to top of windscreen stuck onto silver paintwork, and if this stops it, will get a clear bathroom sealant, to seal the rubber edge in the summer if i'm feeling better after this debilitating Chemo therapy.
My old 124 E280 had bad leaks around rear side window side by tailgate on both sides, done 10 years before scrapping it at 320,000 miles and never leaked again (got it in £ shop).
