cdi 2003 220
I recently sold my high milage 2007 jag estate 2.0 x type and bought a very low milage 2003 c220cdi which still looks like new.
My question is although my Mercedes drives lovely the Engine seems to be so much noisier than my jaguar (from outside only) especially in closed surroundings and normally at lower speeds whilst engine is not under much power,it almost sounds like a lorry engine, but as soon as i put my foot down a little it sounds very quite.
I have asked my local garage what they think but they tell me this is normal,I love the car but maybe i shouldn't compare it to my old much quieter jaguar?
I am also considering trying to find a similar year and model to compare with.
Or am i just being to paranoid?

Perfectly normal.....the 220 CDi sounds quite agricultural when compared to most modern diesels! The good news is that they are normally long lived if serviced properly.

Blimey. I always thought the Jag 2-litre diesel was quite clattery, so the MB must be deafening!

Or was the X-Type a petrol?

The CDi 220 engine in my 2012 reg C-Class Coupe was noisy and rougher than a badger's arse.

There are lots of comments and press about the 4 cylinder diesel mercs being rough and unrefined. Surely theyre just noisier than others and could this be down in part to the valves being chain driven not fibre belts.
The power and emissions are near top of the class so where is this unrefineness?

I also went from a Jag 2.0 Sport premium to a 220 CDi ! My Jag was also quieter but after nearly 3 years in the MB I certainly prefer the Merc! :)

mine has 256,000 miles and i think its fairly quiet on tickover from the outside.. Maybe yours just needs running in more ;)

I have noticed that if the rubber clips/rings that hold the airfilter box to the engine are worn or missing it virtually doubles the noise as the box vibrates !

Very true! I had 1 broken and had the pair replaced and it was better. I am also convinced that regular oil changes with quality oil makes a difference.
