Hello and welcome to the forum!

This is quite a common problem. Here's the order to do things in, - cheapest first:

1. Check the transmission oil level. (Requires a workshop tool, so an indy or gearbox specialist will probably do this for little or no cost)

2. The electrical connector to the transmission can fail. Replacement by a good indy or gearbox specialist.

3. The electroplate in the transmission may have failed. (can be established by a diagnostic check)

Unfortunately, - most likely to be 3.

Good luck!

Hi Stevie, the plate is about £130 from MB and requires draining down of the Transmission to fit, so might as well change the fluid and filter at the same time, - the electrical connector (£20) too while you're there. Probably looking at about £250 to £300 from an indy or gearbox specialist.
