right if i floor my 280, it pulls off then changes 3 times. but its allways seemed a bit undergeared in 4th. i was chatting to someone today, who thought there is an overdrive on the box. that is worked via a vaccum pipe!!. is he, as i suspect. talking rubbish, or do i have a 4 speed box with overdrive that is not working? :-|

4th is top gear, there is no overdrive. It may have a "lock up" function for the torque convertor when in 4th, which effectively prevents the TC from slipping at cruising speeds, saving a bit on fuel. I know that the ZF boxes fitted to Classic Range Rovers have this function, and it is vac operated. You will be hard pushed to tell when it is locked up though, and I have no idea how to test it!

As said you have a 4-speed box and there is no overdrive, if you can state what revs you are pulling in 4th gear at say 60mph someone with a similar car should be able to tell you if that is correct.
