Hi all, new guy here so maybe you can help ?

Am looking into getting an early c180/c200 Esprit or Sport - L/M/N or possibly P reg, am on a limited budget so will probably have to be a high mileage example, so would like to know all your thoughts on theese cars along with any problems to look out for. Car will need a.b.s / remote locking / electric windows at least (+ as many more toys as possible really :) )

So all thoughts and generall running costs appreciated, thanks in advance.

I've recently traded my 98 C200 Sport for a new 320SLK

Obviously I'm delighted with my new car, but I have to say, with 82K on the clock and 6 years under it's belt my C200 felt just as new and I aint kiddin.

I paid top end for the C200, but I was looking for something absolutely spotless cos I look after my cars.

I'd have another tomorrow, I'd just spend time looking and getting as much info as poss, I gather there are a few pitfalls with rust etc......I never encountered this.

One thing I would add, I'd go for a quality motor rather than the toys, you may find 2 cars, one with a better spec but high miles, and one in better nick with fewer gizmo's.

I'd go for the low spec minter any day.

Thanks Danw. Are there any mechanical/electrical problems that you know of ? I will be looking for an automatic version (most seem to be manual though) and do you think high miles are a problem for these cars ?
Cheers

Manuals are more economical. Mileage is rarely an issue if it's been well looked after.

Going on what I read any of the problems that do exist are not necessarily mileage related. There are electrical issues dealt with elsewhere. Windows, some fo the toys can be problematic.

The engines etc seem to handle good mileages PROVIDED they are well maintained. Mint body and interior is a must, good maintenance a must. High mileage is ok if well maintained and you should insist on seeing the service records, not just the stamps in the book. Don't be alarmed if they show problems, it means they have been repaired. MBs need good drop links and bushes to feel right and they are not expensive and worth doing anyway unless you are sure they have bene done. They give a knock at the front end which in other cars could be alarming.

I have 87k up and car drives like new, no reason why you should avoid mileage. I have had problems but if you find a good independent or a good dealer offering discounts you should be ok. The quality of main dealers is however very poor and MB have little interest in customer service issues.
