I was insured with Admiral last year and my renewal came in at £1100 and after a call to them they could only get it down to £1004 so i did a search online and Privilege came up cheapest so i went through their website and applied for insurance with them and got it for £573! Over a £400 saving! just shows how important it is to shop around :D

I'd been with Zurich (Eagle Star) for my entire driving career (25 years), never cost them a penny in claims, and they wanted £500+ to insure a Mondeo a few years ago. I did all the usual comparison websites, (which are by no means comprehensive), in addition to Privilege, who at the time wanted £250ish. I now insure the C220 with them for £229. As you say, worth shopping around.

I'll try Chris Knott next time. These days I simply use the comparison sites and go with the cheapest (within reason).
Last year I insured through an online site who turned out to be run by a broker called Bedford insurance as they were the most competitive. This year they wrote to me and recommended I switch to a different ins co for my renewal. The price wasn't bad but I shopped around anyway. I found a better quote online and, being fair, took the details to bedford who couldn't beat them so said sorry and signed up with the new firm instead. No more loyalty I'm afraid.
Got the new policy paperwork through last week.... from Bedford Insurance. Potty.

£1,000 for a 2001 C320 - To me, that says they don't want to cover you anymore.

Had been with Provident (through the AA) for the CLK, upon change AA advised Provident wouldn't cover SL, cheapest they could find was Sabre at £1002! An afternoon on 'net came up with Elephant at £493!

I am only 24 though, but i still expected it to be slightly less than that. I was expecting around £800 so was pretty chuffed with the £570 from privilege!

Wow that is quite a saving!
Just think of all the maintenance you can do with that extra £400 :D

I am planning to take son on a trip to France in the SL in June. Phoned yesterday to add him to the policy for a week.

He is 36 years old, has driven for 19 years and has never been in a traffic "accident" or made a motor claim, but the premium required for 7 days (the minimum) was 35% higher because he offended 2 speed cameras (<40 mph in a 30 limit). Unhappily, being caught on camera is proof of culpability, regardless of driving record. I guess it is easy to penalise.

So as they say on the television quiz shows "points cost pounds" and a great way to reduce your insurance premium is to avoid them.

Must be a sign of the times, mine has come down steadily over the last two years despite a 5k repair job (tree blown over in front of me at 50 mph) goes down as a fault claim as they cannot recoup costs from a tree!!
My E220 CDI is now £310 with Privilege down from £360 for my previous C220and my wifes has just been renewed with LV at £260 down from £350. Both of us have class 2 business miles and both do around 18K miles.
It sure does pay to shop around, as Jberks says, no loyalty anymore!!

I'm amazed by this too - my renewal with Frizzell (Liverpool Victoria) was about the best I could get, apart from using companies I'd never heard of.

One thing that I think is useful (but other people hate this) is the automatic renewal. I like it in case I ever forget, but mainly because you can ring up and tell them not to renew - so they ask you why, you mutter about the price, and they knock money off. Really, the premium I got this year wasn't bad, but they still knocked £40 off!

As a slight divergence for those that may have had a motorcycle claim, Admiral don't consider them relevant when quoting for car insurance!

ML 270 Cdi and S type Jag 2.7 Diesel Sport Saloon, and now a VW diesel GT golf
Norwich Union Direct do it for me on my Jag and wifes car, Peugeot 407, BUT were way off with the Merc ML 270.
I found Churchill was the best at for that at £204, full comp and 90 days overseas per year.
As you say no loyalty from the insurers Shop Around and you will save money.
