Car is question;

2010 C - Class (204.049)
Engine 271.820
Manual transmission
1.8L

Symptom - chain rattle (quite badly)
Running - No,wont start now
Xentry - P036562 the position sensor for the exhaust camshaft sensor (cylinder bank 1) has an electrical fault. The signal comparasion is faulty.

History,

Driving down motorway, didnt seem to be an issue pulled off at slip road and stopped at lights, it was like somebody had took a bag of spanner and threw them into the engine, not good.

Pulled over and switched off, waited few minutes, car started (still noisey) drove 200yards and switched off again but turns out i was blocking an access to a business and had ro move, turn key wudnt start and had to push out of the way and get a recovery truck to take it home.

Anyone any experience of this type of issue and advice ?

I'm i going to be luckey enough that its a timing kit and cam adjusters or is there bent valves ?

If valves are bent then its scrapped as cost is not in the car if its just a timing kit and adjusters i might tackle it myself to save a few quid (thanks bank of england) with a timing kit from a well known aucfion site and get rid of the car to phil's mates at .. buy ... car.

Any advice on the work, i can find mu say adound a vehicle handy enough but i thought id reach out to some on here or parts kit/list would be greatly appreciated.

anyway thanks in advance.

If it sounded like a bag of spanners it's probably bent valves. Sure fire way is to do a compression test.

It's jumped timing and probably bent all the intake (or exhaust) valves.

Replace all the valves, chain, adjusters and tensioner, new gasket and it will be fine (if no damage done to the head valve seats etc)

It has 74675 miles.

The 271.820 was the engine number shown in xentry, apologises for the confusion

And to do this i need to put a timing chain kit on it anyway, correct as it will not start, well i dont 100% know that it wont as i didnt want to wind it over in case i bent valves.

Thanks for your reply,appreciated

Argghhh, anymore good news .

Thats what i expected but just didnt want to here it.

Anyway of telling if valves are bent without having to leak test it, just that i dont want to try and start it and do more damage.....eeek

No way without testing, or taking the heads off!

You could remove the cams and followers and check the heights of the valve tips. Not definitive but one or more significant lower says valve bent.

Pulled the covers off and lined up TDC.
Exhaust looks out and xentry says P036562 so im guessing that makes sense.

So, chain, VVT sprockets and tensioner, lock up cams, split chain and feed the top chain through whilst removing the old one and then see if it sounds like a bent valve, never noticed anything when rotating bottom crank but that may mean nothing regarding bent valves.

Few photos are attached for any reference and advice

cheers

Excellent pics buddy .
That’s a low mileage to be having chain and cam problems .

Well thats what i thought but i'm sure doing short journeys for the past 40k wouldnt help.
It is what it is i guess, just trying to find the most cost effective way of repairing this till my new car arrives and it sees me through, last thing i needed was sinking money into it.

Yeah there no sure way to know until you replace chain and sprockets and do a compression test. I've bought a non start slk where it had no compression when cranking and it was obvious. Both sprockets were worn although it was m271 kompressor engine. I've done chain and sprockets and even after sounds with no compression. Took the head off and all 8 intake valves were bent. Replaced and lapped all the valves and all runs sweet!

Well apart from having bad luck i wouldn't have any so i'd say i've bent valves.
So, with that said it's a chain, x2 sprockets,x1 tensioner, gallon of oil,oil filter, coolant, all the seals that go along with that, locking kit and chain splitter ?
Ouch ‍♂️♂️♂️

That correct ?

MB are silly prices so if anyone has a kit that i could get and link too it would be fantastic.

Cheers

I went with genuine parts mostly like chain and tensioner and cam cover gasket along with thermostat and cylinder head front cover coolant outlet seal. And I bought on autodoc elring head bolts and head gasket. Also valves are on back order so I bought febi bilstein valves. Luckily already had the tools for the job so just cost me parts and a days worth of work.
