Hi,

My father is about to change his series 126 S Class for a W140 S280, unfortunately the car is coming with an aftermarket Head Unit. Does anybody know where i can get a nice MB unit and CD changer. I understand that the very latest systems will not work in the W140. Also was the 97 R S280 supplied with a Mb Stereo or not? Who makes the Mb units?

Thanks.

oe units can either be from sony, becker (rare) or bosch(blaupunkt)

Why are you  so worried about oe for sound?

no one else is! including dealers.
The only time oe is needed is for comand systems

Having looked into this subject there was also another manuf that supplied the Mercedes branded head units. If you look at your code card , it will say either BE for Becker or al for Alpine . Alpine was the chosen OEM factory fit supplier and these head units carried the names: special (I got this one) and exquisite. These were the older looking ones with the big flat volume nobs and the numbers 1-6 along the bottom. This would have been the original factory fitted head unit available at the time of a w140 ?97. I say that because when dad bought his first two c classes (93) and (95) it was like telephone numbers to get these head units fitted, so most people opted for the Sony, blaupunkt etc head units dealers fitted in. The Mercedes head units are nice and sound really good, if you like sound in a car. Spend a lot of money and drive about with a smile on your face. If you are just going to listen to the radio. buy a Sony or blaupunkt system.

Try http://www.becker.com these will look right in the dashboard and don't have daft graphics or wacky colors in them. Just good German design, much like the w140 ..

ohh, and the bose system in the W140 was amasing .. 10 or 12 speakers from memory

Hifi is a personal thing, this is only my opinion.
