OK, hands up! I kerbed a rear wheel today. A ridiculously narrow car park exit.....

Looks like I've chipped the alloy coating, what's to be done? How is this best treated?

you could always live with it (cheapest option)

or get it repaired ($$$$)

or maybe someone here has another more useful opinion

cheers

Hi there,
Mr anyweb pretty much sumed it up! there are hundreds of companys which specialise in wheel referb. They will most likely come to you or you car leave the car with them. If its chipped the lacquor on the alloy will over time most likely pit and bubble and discolour unfortunatly! Or you can buy a new one.

As a temp fix - pop some wheel wax on it. This should protect against corrosion. Longer term, the laquer needs repair/replace.
Chips away may be able to tidy it, otherwise its a full referb.
Personally I wax and leave mine - they have the odd scuff, but whilst I love it, it's a car used on a road so what you gonna do?!
I could spend a fortune refinishing them - and scuff one again the next week.
Bodywork I fix - but wheels I live with.

Forgot that, mine on the SL is one of those collapsible one that you must blow up before you can use it

Does that mean you must carry a foot pump or does the car have a gizmo for inflating the spare?

Yes, the standard tool kit has a blow up aerosol, and an electric pump. Still I am better off than some S class cars as they do not have a spare, in fact you cant have a spare on the AMG SLs as there is no room for it, so I suppose it shows that you are getting value for money.

Photo evidence

How hard is it to photo a shiny wheel rim close enough to see anything!!!
This is the best I could do. Looks worse than I thought, I can see a shiny metal gouge never mind a chip! :-( :-(

Thats a naughty one, if you had it refurbished they would weld up the damage and re turn it, then re finish.

Or you could gently file away the burr, fill with tiny bit of P38, flat and paint with silver wheel paint,

Or just file away the burr and float some clear lacquer into the hole

Thanks Malcolm. Annoying thing is I only felt the slightest nudge!

Just out of intrest what would a refurb likely cost? (this is a daily hack, no show car)
I'll most likely try and camoflage the evidence
