Hi, i have a 1994 E300D auto saloon. It has 180k on clock, it goes fantastic but has developed a metal kerchinging noise which sounds as though it is coming from inside the timing chain cover. It only makes this noise at low revs when accelerating or decellerating. I think it sounds like the timing chain catching on something or slapping the front cover ? It is a prominent noise when it makes it

Any ideas ?

All advice welcome

Hello Mary and welcome.:D:D

Yes the timing chain will do this when worm,it will also do it on the first start, you do need to get it sorted quickly before it jumps a tooth. Are you some where near Warrington

have you heard this noise while revving the engine with the bonnet up? if so can you be sure it is not an external item, perhaps powered by the poly belt? the belt is easy to remove on this engine and it may be worth trying with it undone.

for the record, timing chains gears and associated components rarely give trouble on this engine, at any mileage.

Are you thinking of the damper on the belt

always rule out polybelt components first when it's easy and quick

off the top of my head it doesn't ring a bell (kerching), but could be that or broken front case at the steering pump or any one of many things.

perhaps maryhinge (oh dear ) could youtube it for us?

As Alexander, it is not uncommon for the PAS pump to snap the housing. However, this tends to lead to quite a rumble on idle.Remove the poly belt & see if the noise disappears.
I have had a couple of these where the vacuum pump has cut through the gear (369 or 351 in the link) causing premature stretching of the chain, but this is very unusual.
Is the noise more audible withe the oil filler cap off? Please don't put your ear to the hole to listen though!!!
