...and before you pop them in, it's worth checking that you can actually operate the lock with the key. Cars are so often locked on the 'plip' only these days that the locks seize up with lack of use!

just a thought, as the plastic opens the metal "protection" flap on the lock, would this lead to water\grit getting in?

Would I be right in thinking that a squirt of WD40 in the keyhole before putting the covers on would help?

Thanks again! £3.84 for 2, and yes they do fit both vehicles !

Not overly impressed, as i stood for 25 minutes (seemed like an hour) at Dartford Mercedes parts department desk, waiting to be seen too, while 8 Mercedes branded employees walked round desperately trying not to make eye contact.

Just how many staff do Dartford have that walk around not helping customers?
I've noticed that there as well! yet a real honey of a young lady sorted me out with a locking wheel nut key last time I was there :)

If the lock is working, spray in PTFE before fitting the cover

The peg on the cover actually fills the slot better than the cover from what I have found plus the cap goes in far enough to seal it off, one could put a little vasalene (cant spell it) on the rear of the cap and its water tight

Don't forget to add attach a piece of bright coloured string.
I can just imagine all the fumbling around with knives and screwdrivers trying to pop them out when all iced over :)

Also bright coloured string will help you find them in the snow :)

Sounds like a brilliant idea but......How do we attach the string... or is it me being a bit thick?...

Thanks

Sue :)

Not meaning to sound stupid but we've never had to cover the key holes before so is there any reason why we should now

The older the car gets the more chance of corrosion setting in, plus on many cars the key seldom gets used as we all use our remote, it is when the battery goes flat and you need to get in you find the lock corroded.

It is just a prevention is better than a cure

All of which can be accomplished with a squirt of lock lube once a month and a quick jiggle with the blade key.

Fitting covers could lead to complacency and seized locks!

None whatsoever! Purely personal choice

That is hardly an answer is it,,, the amount of post on"cannot get in the car" as the key will not turn is quite high,, these little cover can stop the lock from corroding and just a prevention is better than cure, in the worst cases new lock barrels required, plus the inconvenience of no car

That is rubbish, have you ever used one, have you ever seen one, as I said at the start, if the lock is working, spray in some PTFE then fit the cover, as before these plastic caps are dome shaped make a water proof seal to the inside of the barrel.

No one lubes their locks once a month

Perhaps they should then (as you used to advocate in your sig line?)

Just fitting lock covers could lead to out if sight out of mind. There is no guarantee they are water tight!

Out of sight out of mind ,,,I do not get that as the boot ones are out of sight and out of mind and that is the trouble hence this thread.

Again you should look at one before you comment of what you do not know:confused:.

The inside is shaped perfectly to the lock barrel, the center peg is a tight fit, now when a car goes along at speed, it creates a suction effect on the rear, estate cars suffer worse owing to the larger flat surface area. This just forces water into the rear lock, now if this did not happen, we would not get problems with these boot locks would we :D as before there is no way that water can get in with these caps,,,, now why do you think that Mercedes make them,,, sorry they do not come with AMG on them, the have a key emblem:(

I am not in the habit of putting up DIY's and mods that do not work, and usually much more practical than having AMG on the comand screen for 2 seconds that only you can see

It’s completely misleading to suggest or to imply that the absence of these lock covers from the key hole will result in corrosion and failure of the lock, regular testing with the key blade and lubrication of the locks is important and should be done as preventative maintenance about three or four times a year.

Door and boot locks have drain holes to remove water should any enter the key hole, the keyhole spring loaded flap is adequate to keep out dirt. Locks don’t freeze, it’s the water around the keyhole flap that freezes.

The lock covers are fitted for cosmetic purposes and to give the impression of a superior car that doesn’t appear to need a key hole.

My first 210 had them as standard...very nice they looked too. The present one doesn't have them....the locks (all of them ) still work after 12 years.

If you want to buy them then do so, but, as Dec says, they can be merely cosmetic, the other values are not proven.
