I don't know or can't see anywhere if this topic has been addressed elsewhere. So here we go. Why has keyless entry been introduced. It's taken the motor industry 25 years if not more to try and stop cars being stolen, Alarms/Immobilisers etc etc and now it is so easy to steal somebody's pride and joy by being able to scan/clone call it what ever you want, the key. Apparently your key can be compromised by somebody with the right equipment by walking or driving by you. Fortunately in my case my 2013 SL is not keyless entry. So I have to go through a seemingly time consuming task of pressing a remote opening a door and then inserting the key into a slot and turning it to start the engine.

I have no problem with pressing a button to start the car when you are close enough. Unfortunately I do not have that but I have set my key fob so that only the drivers door opens when I press it the first time. I hope that the keyless open is an optional choice that you can switch off. Surely it must be?

I believe it can be switched off by dealer... where they can charge you for the pleasure!

You just double click when locking and this disables keyless entry which can also be abled when needed....
Does the double-click actually disable keyless? I thought that was just deadlocking the car (and on some, putting some of the consumer electrics to sleep)?

When you double click it disables the keyless entry for that time you then unlock the car from the fob , I have keyless entry but mostly use the fob to lock and unlock my car. I also put my keys in a faraday bag overnight just in case and also keep my spare keys in a faraday bag in the safe. Keyless entry is as safe as you make it !

I get keyless entry. It's a convenience for anyone with an armful of shopping who can't go delving into a handbag or pocket for keys without having to put the whole lot down.
The biggest issue is the lack of security it brought about wasn't well thought through.

Our 2002 SL has keyless entry and keyless go and it's definitely convenient. The R Class doesn't and I've been caught several times with arms full of shopping and key deep in pocket.

On my car I just removed the keyless go item that fits in the key slot. Perhaps this is not an option on other cars.
Double clicking definitely disables the key until you next unlock the car. You would have to remember to double click every time though.

An old B-Class.
I’ve had it on some cars. Don’t have it on current cars and have never missed it. Intentionally did not specify it on my SL because of the theft issues.

I don’t do that much shopping.:);)

It was added for convenience. Much like the remote key fob use, which some of us are old enough to remember had it's own issues with cloning when they first came out. Over time security was improved.

Keyless was thought to have the similar security, but what the car companies hadn't taken into account was that in order to work the key fob and the car must broadcast and listen for radio messages on a regular basis and although the signals are weak they can be boosted. The thieves just have a more sensitive receiver than your car does and then relay the key signal boosting its power and range.

Their boosting technology would work just as well with a standard radio fob, but you'd have to be pressing the button to for it to transmit.

Double click locking is extremely useful when cleaning and polishing the car. I used it all the time to stop the locking going nuts when I was polishing the door handles.

because the world shifted on its axis and MORE car theft is desirable - steal from the poor and give to the rich

your insurance premiums increase = good
your depression increases = good
more opportunities for scum to learn and steal = good
sells more cars = good
environmental damage ? they are already planning to leave

I agree with you on the safety aspect of using faraday bags, but from what you describe you have no need for them because you never have the keyless function enabled when away from your car. Your keyless function is only enabled while your car is unlocked. :)
Modern Mercedes and probably most keyless fobs go into sleep mode after a very short period of inactivity (30 seconds maybe?), but like yourself I always keep my 2 fobs in separate faraday bags as a matter of routine regardless.

Personally speaking I love the convenience of a keyless system, and of the 5 cars I have owned with this feature it was standard with the model spec.
I had another car amongst those 5 which was not keyless entry and had a standard key ignition (2018 Audi S3), and although I initially missed the feature I soon got used to it.
The only time keyless entry ever becomes a minor niggle for me is when washing, so during this process I place my fob out of range because I need the doors to be unlocked and dont want them locking by mistake.

The bags are more a force of habit now just put it in the bag where I keep them when I come home
