Hello all,

After all your answers which was gratefully appreciated especially as i was getting really frustrated with the noise from the rear of the car as i drive on bumpy roads or speed bumps, but sorry to dissapoint all of you regarding the coil springs..." this wasn't the problem " so i still have the noise.... Any one have any more ideas...
looking forward to your replies..

a knock is always something loose/worn. as theyre not mcpherson struts at the rear, try swapping the shock absorbers over from side to side at the rear, to see if the noise moves as i worked on a ford years ago that had a knock at the rear. new shocks fitted ant the knocking went with it! also check the top shock absorber mounting bushes as you change them over.

another common one was a slightly loose boot catch not holding the bootlid down tightly enough, loose towbar/bumper (yes ive seen that, but it was obvious) spare wheel fastened down correctly, or items in the boot are all causes of knocking ive seen in the past. admittedly on fords, but the basic principles are the same!

Hi pete,
We have had the shocks off & they are fine + mountings, the boot catch is tight as, i have checked the noise with the spare wheel out & it still persists i have nothing in the boot at any given time so im still at a loss, i undertstand that there is something loose & i guess a process of elimination is the one. So ****** annoying i wish the noise gets worse but it doesnt

cant be much else, can it Malcolm? incidentally, shocks i came across that were knocking seemed fine when removed, but when swapped with another car, the noise moved to the other car with them. just a thought

Are the springs hitting/rubbing on the bottom arms?

Uusually it's the front bushes .. sounds like rear noise at times.

I have the same annoying noise on my 2005 180c K which has covered nearly 20,000 miles. I have narrowed it down to the rear O/S. The springs have been checked thoroughly. There is nothing lose in the boot. All rubbers appear to be in good condition. I know it sounds daft but the noise is more a 'Boyng' sound than a knock. It happens over a sharp bump such as a rut ion the road or manhole cover rather than an undulating surface.

had a similar problem pre mb major service. the garage advised the roll bar bushes had not so much worn , more work hardened. changed problem solved

Just to update everyone who kindly put forward suggestions. It was the O/S rear shock absorber. My son in law who is a mechanic changed the unit and problem solved.:D
