Large gain in power and torque for modest increase in overall fuel consumption. I had a MY 2000 W 202 200 Kompressor, 170 bhp, 170 lbs foot. The unkompressed engine was around 120bhp, 130 lbs foot, IIRC. The Kompressor car was actually more economical (31.1 mpg over 25,500 miles) than the 190 I had previously (27 mpg over 40,000), whilst the performance was much higher.

In use, the Kompressor is unobtrusive and I don't believe requires much maintenance, although when well used, issues such as pulleys may need attention.

So it is an effective way to boost performance cheaply in manufacture, add little to the maintenance cost and virtually no penalty on fuel consumption.

Compared with the turbo charger, it also produces power throughout the rev range, with out the lag then surge you get as the turbo comes on song.

Hi,
I have a W202 1997 C230K (M111 2.3 Kompressor engine fitted) this engine according to MB's own figures is the most economical 4 cylinder engine fitted to the pre-facelift W202, this even includes the diesel engined versions C220, and C250TD.
As a matter of interest in a manual gearbox equipped vehicle it is also the fastest, in Auto form it shares the title with the Auto C280

Alex. I have the same car as you used to have, a 2000 W202 on the 'W'.
I believe that they are 192bhp and the C230 is 150bhp,(the same as the previous C220 model) I'm sure the V6 240 has the 170bhp that you speak of.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though!

Please excuse me Alex. I have just realised that you were talking about the run out model on the 202, the C200K
I'm sure these were 163 against the 136 of the C200.

Must get my eyes tested!

To err is human - I must have done it myself at least twice!

But as Andy pointed out, having a Kompressor does not compromise economy.

I recall seeing the 170/170 figure somewhere, but you are not the first person to furnish alternative figures for the run out 200. I am happy to accept that your numbers are more accurate than mine.
