Kwik Fit Faults found advice needed?

Hi,

First post and first Mercedes (06 C220 CDI coupe). Have just had a full service done at Kwik Fit as had a voucher code. Surprisingly they have "found" a number of faults which they say requires attention.
1.NSF lower arm dustcover is damaged
2. middle exhaust hanger is broken
3. Ususal about tyres being low etc.

Now the Car was only MOT'd last week by a garage i have used for years on my Landrovers. Only advisory was the Brakelines were starting to show corrosion.

The guy at Kwikfit said it looks like the exhaust hanger has been welded before.

The price they have given me including two new tyres, 2 new rear discs and pads as apparently one was slightly corroded? is £900. I told him to foxtrot oscar.

Would any of the above failed the MOT? I have found the dust covers on fleebay for £12 but am not too clued up on them having only owned landys before this mercedes. Also can the exhaust hook just be re-welded as he quoted just £400 for that fix!

any help appreciated and apologies if this is in the wrong thread.

Cheers JT (Loving the car btw)

Yep...you can just weld it back on.

What is the dust cover for...the brakes...not sure if that would be an MOT failure.

£900...indeed foxtrot...

Exhaust hangers and ball joint dust covers are parts of the MOT now.

It cost me a tenner to have my exhaust bracket welded back on. Literally a few minutes work.

Thanks looks like Kwikfit fit trying to drum up some business. Apparently these dust covers can be an MOT failure but they say it is only damaged so I'm guessing not enough for a fail? Am I right in thinking you need to remove the shock to replace? I've checked the discs and they're almost new as are the pads just slight sign of rust on the outer edge of one disc. Any more info or pics on these dust covers appreciated. Is there an easy fix? Cheers

I wouldn't have a service at Kwik Fit if it was free.

Or even if was free and they gave me £200. (I suppose there's a point at which I'd let them do it, but I'm not sure where that is). :)

One of the significant factors in choosing to opt of my company car was so that I wouldn't have to go there any more for tyres.

Some of the dust covers are peened into the arm and cannot be changed separately. Depending on which arm needs to be removed, it may require the shock to be removed too.

First and last time believe me. Always done servicing myself but thought I'd take a chance and get the service history stamped and keep it going. Live and learn !

Considering all the factors in your case I would take a careful look at the dust cover to see how it failed so soon after the MOT, did it split or was it cut? I once had to report an MOT testing station for creating work.

C.... I once had to report an MOT testing station for creating work.

 Surely not ...
My cars have been to the same place for years now, they don't do repairs so have no financial interest in failing it. He's fair, but will give you the nod to some things that might be towards the end if its life ;) ;) ;)

£400 to weld an exhaust bracket lol...

Merc have done mine for free as its gone twice in the time I have had the car, and my mum has had 2 c classes since 1995 and both had exhaust bracket failure, yet wierdly no other cars I have had have this problem.....

They are trying to make money back off a cheap service, and some punters will be sucked in by it. Same as the low brake pad **** all garages spout.

Tell us which Kwik Fit so we can all ring them and ask them where the hell they dream up the estimates from and ask them why they are trying to rip off a forum member!

Talking about garages looking for work, I heard a story years ago about a fast fit chain offering 'free health checks' and arming the grease monkeys with a can of WD40 and a stanley knife.

The WD40 was to squirt up into the shocks and create a very realistic looking leak, the stanley knife was to put a cut on an inside tyre wall, only visible from the ramp of course.

So you can imagine the scenario, you sit sipping your complementary coffee in the waiting area and the service manager comes through and looks at you, he makes a sucking noise through his teeth and says 'er you'd better come and look at his sir, I think we've just saved your wife and kids lives'

Shocking but the guy who told me this had been employed there for about 4 hours he walked out in disgust when they got to that part of his induction.

A good friend of mine was employed by one of the well known Faster Fit Chains.
He went to them as an MOT tester after his previous place of work was sold due to a CPO. Anyway, he stayed approx 3 Months. The targets and the way they are expected to achieve them was his reason for leaving. I could share some of his tales but if you want to hear a lot more then search for the facebook page. Its an eye opener.
Remember. You can't get better than one of there fitters.....apparently. :)
