:confused:Hey all,
Got a wee problem.
My No5 injector on my 2000 x ML 270 cdi is leaking bad some black gunk around top and phut phut phutting away.
Now do i need a new injector or would it be the washer, not the best mechanically but have a mate with a small garage who said he would order me one. but my concern is are these injectors coded ???
if we change it out would it work or would i have to go to Merc specialist to get the engine management reprogrammed???
ANY help/info appreciated..

Most probably just needs the copper seal replaced.. sometimes the seat needs to be recut as well depending on how long it has been blowingpast....injector would be the last resort but would need to be tested...

As above. You will also need a new retaining stretchbolt.

Hey there,
I had the same problem with mine. No.5 was, as you very well put it, PHut, PHut, Phutting away!
I did alot of asking around about this issue. And I've heard some horror stories concerning these injectors. Sounds like you're injector is in the early stages of the "black death". This is carbon build up. In this case, a small garage wont be able to do much for you. These injectors are a serious piece of kit operating at 2000psi!
I gave mine into an injector specialist here in Ireland. He is in fact the only injector specialist in the south of Ireland and he happened to be located right beside my workplace! So I dropped it in.
They removed every injector and put them into a special Bosch test rig.
Two needed to be reconditioned and I told them to put new seals into all injectors. New style seals were developed after 2003 or something(better sealing capabilities).
They then put new clamps and pre-tensioned bolts in which are a must.
The hardest part is getting out the old injector and in the case of the black death this is nigh on impossible. The specialist I was dealing with had a special pneumatic pullers developed for the job.
He says that some are so bad, especially in the sprinter van that he has to ask some customers to sign a disclaimer in case the head has to come off.

Its important that the pretensioned bolts are done right because if they are tightened too much the threads can be stripped and thats a problem. This was a poor design flaw with these bolts. they are way too flimsy. In Fact the ML in generall was an overall poor design flaw!

There are others on here who are able to fix these at home. I think one guy made his own special removal tool. But he had lathes and milling machines and things.

Mine cost €700 all, this included a years warranty from Bosch. Bosch is the injector system used in the ML's and sprinters etc.

hi there

i have both sets of pullers for removing the injectors, but the "black death" still makes it very difficult to remove the injectors,by using PVCu solvent cleaner on the carbon it breaks down the build up and allows the injector to be removed from the cylinder head by hand without the need for expensive pullers

I must admit I have the same problem, but if you check the head before sending the car in you can save a few hours labour by removing the build up yourself rather than paying workshop prices. Main thing is to remember aluminium is soft.
