When filling up my ,98 w202 c200 estate, get over the halfway mark and petrols starts spilling out from somehwere underneath!!
Any one ever heard of a leaking connecting pipe (is there such a thing or is it one unit?) or leaking petrol tank?
Going in for a service in a couple of weeks and I'm worried about what it could potentially cost!

If you take 2 of the covers off the bottom of the tank that cover the sender units, I would suspect the fuel is leaking past the drain plug seals. I have replaced these on all of the W202's in my family now, not difficult or expensive.

Item 20/38 in the top picture in Malcolm's link.

Seals are a couple of £ each, half to an hours labour will be ample at a garage..

Surely if it was the drain plug seals they would be leaking all the time and not just when the tank was filled to half or above

The leak past the seals is only very slight, thus when there is a heavier weight of fuel in the tank, it leaks past the seals.

Was exactly the same with the W202's I have done, low fuel, no problem, full tank.... smell the fuel.

you're right - low fuel no problem. When full it stinks!
However, when filling up, after it reaches a certain point petrol pours out onto the ground(OK I own up: I haven't actually seen this, it was my wife who told me!)
I'm taking the diagram to the garage when I get it serviced as it sounds good to me ;)

You really need a ramp to be able to see.

There will be a telltale drip from around the drain plug. Don't be tempted to use ptfe tape round the plug, only proper new seals as the petrol will eat away at it and leak again.

After months of only half filling up, finally got it on the ramp after filling it to the brim and petrol embarrassingly pouring all over Tescoes forecourt!
There's a rubber connecting pipe which would appear to connect the metal down pipe from the filler cap to the metal pipe going to the tank. It was split! Apparently it cost £12 from Mercedes and was simple to fit. So thanks for your help but it was a new one which is why I'm posting a reply so you can add it to your incredibly extensive fact base!
PS: I can highly reccomend a small Mercedes specialist in Wimbledon called Martin.
