I recently bought a 2003 (03) plate C220 CDi manual which has 80,000 on the clock. Everything on the car is fine and I am very happy with it, however there is only one slight cosmetic issue with the car.

The leather trim just under the gearstick looks very tatty as the leather on it has frayed and is not in keeping with the age of the car (it seems to me that MB have used some cheap leather trim under the gear stick).

Is it possible for me to just purchase some leather trim that i can attach to the gear stick or do I have to buy a new gearstick with the trim attached to it? I am looking for the black leather variety. Also can some kind soul please direct me to a cheap supplier (either online or otherwise) where i can purchase the leather trim (or gearstick supplied with black leather trim).

thanks in advance

The leather used for this has been hammered out to make it cover the round knob, and is very hard to replace as you have to take off the top and bottom ferrel's.
have you tried to connellise it, that is what we did to re do leather seats. Mask off the top and bottom area's that are not leather.
Get a matt black aerosol and spray some into a small shallow lid or pot, make up a pad with a piece of rag, dip it into the paint and dab it on the leather, you will get several coats in the first few min's, then apply one coat every 2-3 hour and it will look like new, Any tear's should be stuck down first with an impact glue.

cheers malcolm. I think this may be the way forward - im almost certain that there is some leather polish/colour that you can apply to tired seats etc that can be purchased at places like halfords. Will pop in there tomorrow

right ive been looking on ebay for something to use and have found the following items:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&item=140014655008&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&item=320007309056&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

and finally this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8059980101&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

what in your view would be the most effective item to 'colour' up the offending frayed parts of the leather under the gear knob?
