I have a 2002 ML 270 and sometimes the following happens.
When I brake and come to a rest sometimes the following warning ights come on on the dash display.
BAS/ESP, ETS, ABS, and after about 1 second the EPC light also joins in.
This only seems to happen when the roads are wet, and happens perhaps once a week or so not all the time.
When this happens if I stop the car , switch off the engine, re-start and drive off after about couple of seconds mostly the lights then go out and all is well till the next time.
This NEVER happens whilst driving only when just having come to rest.
Any help would be appreciated as I cannot get my head round this, except from thinking there is an electrical short fault caused by the wet from the road but I am only guessing.

Hope you guys can help.

Thanks.

Mile

Sounds like the brake light switch to me. Pop a new one on and see if it goes away.
I suspect the other symptoms, weather etc are all conicidence rather than symptomatic.

This morning upon start-up, my 1999 ML320 displayed 2 amber warning lights, ETS & BAS/ESP, does anyone know if this could be an easy quick self-fix? As MB want £99.00 just to diagnose the problem! Thanks in advance.

Hi Malcolm, if it is the switch wouldnt that mean the brake lights wouldnt come on? Or is it just a built-in con to get our money out of our pockets? Cheers

Ron.

Dash lights etc.

I hade/have the same problem.
The brake light switch seems to do a multitude of things.
In the good old days the switch completed a circuit which put on the brake lights but not any more.
It seems to "speak" to the whole damned car.
It speaks to the cruise control, abs. electronic 4 wheel drive system and the esp system just to name a few.
I changed the brake switch but it did not cure the problem.
I had the car checked at an independant garage Diack Autos in Inverurie and he tells me from his Star diagnostic computer thingie that it is the front nearside ABS/speed sensor.
He is ordering one for me and going to fit it as soon as it arrives.
My lights could be put out by when running above 20 mph just "flick" the ignition switch off and back on as quickly as possible and the light goes out and stays out sometimes for days at a time.
It has not come on for the past 5 days but the memory keeps the fault till it is cleared.
This is one of the problems of this wonderful age of electronics, but the up side is the performance and fuel economy are many times better than they ever were in "the good old days".
I hope this will resolve my dash lights problem.

egards.

Ron.

There are switches and switches. this one is in two parts, and the part that fails is nothing to do with the brake lights, it is a CAN switch, that takes the CAN signal to ground, and the car thinks that the ESP and BAS are malfunctioning, so it turns these systems off

Switch

Seems to me it should be called a "cant" switch cos it cannot tell the difference 'tween a pretend fault and a real one, only joking Malcolm, but why does everyone make thinge so complicated is there any need for it.

Well what it is coming to is, if your driving does not re set correctly the car will not start, or if the drivers seat does the same thing, but yes to clever for their own good. Just think of it, we have this high speed data system going around non stop, when it cant find something, that part goes out of action, or does something silly like I had, where the system tells you that the parking brake is on, that the headlamps are faulty, that the indicators do not work, and the only fault was in the box that collects this info and nothing wrong with any thing else. Its OK having these systems if only the MB engineers knew how they worked
Good cars stopped with the 124.
