Limp e220 bluetec diesel

Am new to Merc. Just bought my e220 diesel bluetec coupe Nov2015 model week back. Only done 8000 miles. Today, was driving back from work in slow traffic and suddenly would not go beyond 3rd gear and wouldn't speed up despite pressing hard on the acclerator. Have a dealer warranty for 3 months limited to £300.
Reading on forums it is being called limp home. Am new to automatic transmission. Never had such a problem in previous cars. Worried that I might have been sold a faulty car.
Would like some advice whether to approach the dealer or go to an independant garage. Obviously worried about the costs. Am based in Birmingham.

Certainly needs a Star session to diagnose the fault
MSL are in Birmingham (Armoury road) and can sort you out ( don’t be put off by them being specialist tuners etc, they also do Mercedes servicing and other more normal stuff).
There are a few other independent specialists on the outskirts too

Thanks. Since the episode last evening it seems to have sorted itself out. Not sure whether me playing around figuring out the controls had done it. Certainly didn't go into any settings.
Have just taken it for a drive this morning and it seems going well.
Is this known to happen and then not occur for some time recurring later?

It can do, they can be a little bit- lets say fickle!
I would still advise a diagnostic- chances are it will reoccur
First thoughts are gearbox tcu or valve body which are better caught early..

Look in the user manual. Find "Speed limiter". Great feature for city driving but can be selected accidentally.

Yeah hopefully, but as you said Mercs do sometimes like to have a but of fun and then pretend it never happened.
