I need help, when I told my ex tonight that the car had gone, her first comment was " if you bought the right car in the first place, you would not have all of these problems  " followed by " did the new owner mind sitting on the pavement  " OK she has driven 33k km in her 93 fiesta. or the chances are that I have put half of that on the car. That works out at 2500 km a year or 1800 miles a year.

Please tell me , am I that far away from understanding women, is it worth trying again with say a CL500 around 03-04.. Being Swedish, she wont admit that its nice to have a top of the range car, but I know she loves them really

Any thought on helping me understand the opposite sex, thank you. Malcolm

Like you now, I am not a MB owner, dont say anything to anyone

Hi Malcolm

Well your ex's comment about 'if you bought the right car in the first place, you wouldn't have had all these problems' seems a little harsh. We all buy things at times that at a later date we realise are not quite what we wanted or really needed, look at all the cars I have got through this year

The CL500 does look a very beautiful car, wouldn't mind one of them sitting on my drive for sure.

I don't think you are that far away from understanding women as I know we are not always easy for men to comprehend. My own feelings are that most women expect their menfolk to know them well enough to be able to instinctively do the 'right thing'. Unfortunately most men aren't mind readers so they struggle with this. I really think men are far less complex and much easier to understand as they say what they mean whilst us women have much more complex minds ;)

Thank you for the reply, in the first part, I too thought the comment was a little hard/harsh, if you mix that with an over sensitive me, then we have found a root problem that I can work on.
I enjoyed my SL very much and it gave me a lot of fun, so from my point ,it was far from a poor choice, Sadly when a womam buys a dress that she likes on the Monday and takes it back for a refund on the Friday, because its awful, is something we cant do with cars. I do not think that there are many impulse buyers with cars.

For the second part, I have taken it all in, and thank you.

If I remember correctly Malcolm, like me you are a fish. Us fish are very sensitive people and feel deeply wounded when someone is harsh with us. I hope your ex is a compatible sign, ideally another water sign :)

Yes I am a silly soft fish I, she is a Virgo, and she is good for me, in so many ways.

Her life is not so good, she has had diabetes for 50 years (all over the place)
with diabetes ones imune system goes down, Had her thiaroid removed 2 years ago, also now gone Gluton intolerant with other complications, she is a wonderful lady who never complaines about herself. (only me)
The side effects are awful, you have to ask in a resturant what the food has been cooked with, cant even ever take a Mc donalds for a quick stop.

I say sorry in taking this forum down to the Audi level with a heart breaker section, but I don't really know another woman to ask anything.

Thank you again Littlebrooklyn. malcolm

Hi Malcolm

That's a coincidence, my partner is a Virgo too. They are the opposite sign to Pisces and after the Water signs are the next best match

However they are perfectionists to a fault and expect other people to be as 'perfect' as they are, so one has to handle them with caution at times.

I'm sorry to hear about her health problems, it must be very hard for her and for you also. I'm sure she has found a real diamond in you though :)

Things should be better now that I am in virtual retirement, time now to participate in the needs of a Virgo.

56 years of serving the public has been good for me, but it takes its toll.

Thank you littlebrooklyn for being so honest,it means a lot to me. Malcolm

Why do you need to worry, Malcolm, what an ex thinks? Some say the most difficult thing in Maths and in life is to accept that X=X. Perhaps it's time for you to have part of your life when you can do what you want to do. Most of us spend most of our lives (at least in part) doing things to please others - wives, children, girlfriends, bosses, traffic wardens and doctors. Now at last you can 'do your own thing'. Leave the lights on, leave the seat up, don't clean the sink every time you use it and enjoy the sheer pleasure of a sports car.:D

Thank you Hawk, We may get back together again, the next few weeks will tell.

speaking 10 min's ago to my good friend in Watford, He has friends that have bought the CL's new, and have found the biggest problem is that you cant park the things, that is you cant open the doors as they are so long, 12" longer than the SL and very heavy. getting rid of them is getting very hard, £100k new, and down to £30k with 40k miles in2-3 years.

The SL it will have to be.
Just heard that MB Direct have got problems in that cars are not selling and 8% can be had if you push, will do this in another thread.

Just a thought. Some men buy sports car to pull birds in their youth and later in response to a mid-life crisis. Some like you Malcolm are genuine enthusiasts for the breed. Talking to wife and two daughters, some girls (usually young) like sports cars as makes boy seem dashing and friends envy. Some like because they like that whole air in your hair, let's go camping or sailing type of thing. But many do not like as want to keep their hair nice and don't like crawling in and out showing their knickers. And they have different tastes. They like luxury and to be cossetted. They like space, comfort, good lighting, good hi-fi, vanity mirrors everywhere --grace, space, pace. Just maybe you could combine your love of 5 litres and V8 performance with comfort, style, sensible doors and all the rest by looking at a good 220 series S class. No problem selling them like there is with the CL, depreciation is big in the first year but then quite reasonable. Or an E55???

I would fall into the latter category of keeping my hair nice and not showing my knickers

When we were looking after a friends SLK recently I kept sneaking out to sit inside it and play about with the roof

I have to say I did feel pretty 'exposed' with the roof down, maybe it's something one gets used to, but I will stick to a normal car I think :)

Last time I saw her in a dress was when my youngest got wed, that was 1998

but even then she was in my 1928 Rolls, and that was a long way up.

Re the hair, the new model is much better in that respect, far less wind.

My girls, all three of them

love the wind in their hair. Mummy girl did think it was a good idea getting the wind deflector though.
Eldest girl (2.5 yrs) " Daddy, what's that noise, faster, faster", while the youngest, (1.5) gurgles just as loud as the V8.
They are the only things that make Daddy smile more than the car.

I've a feeling that Malcolm is a dyed-in-the-wool, wind-in-the hair-type, een if it does come from an air-scarf.

Topless is the only way to drive, Malcolm, you know it makes sense. SL all the way my boy.

That's it,if you can have a 500, so can I, and yes I have gone the full circle and SL it is.sadly the SL does not have the scarf like th SLK. If she comes it only takes seconds to close it, but she went 1k miles in Sweden and loved it.
Myros, that mod kit that they do on Ebay that will allow the roof to closed at 30mph both on the 129 and 230, I will try one.

your wisdom is matched by your choice of car. Nuff said, and good luck finding the one you want.
If you need any looking over up here ( central M62 corridor) just let Slinky and Jberks and me know. I'm sure one of us could do the necessary.

Thank you Myros & Seedmaster, I may well take you up on that offer, as the right car with the right spec and right price could be anywhere.

Where's your thread gone on 8% off at Merc Direct -you were going to start one.

Can't help thinking there must be a compromise car. CLK? Do some hefty engines. Hold value quite well after initial drops. Cabriolet but no need to grovel to get in and out.

The CL is a magnificent beast. Sooooooooo good looking. Pantswettingly beautiful. Is the big door (to let people into the back) really such an issue? Just some thoughts.
