On inspection i could almost see little blasts of what appeared to be air coming up from end injector nearest the bulkhead, posted these pics,

it appears there is a small pipe missing from top of injector as all the others have rubber pipes connecting to each other. I can't see where the pipe connection should go though, no other loose ends.

This daisy chain is often referred to a spill pipe tubing. The last one, that is leaking on your car, should be a blank. You need to get a new blanking end from dealer, or a good motor accesory shop can provide a spill tubing kit with a blank included, although quality can be variable!!

I can't make out what your second picture is. Is that the underside of the bonnet? If so, is that soot? Only clean fuel will leak from the spill tubing. If soot is in evidence the copper washer sealing the injector into the cylinder head may be leaking.

Do the spill tubing first as it is easier, but I think you will need to have that injector out and replace the copper washer.

Thank's, thats a relief, engine is noisy enough without that one, sounded much more serious.

Leaking injector fixed.

Copper washer replaced, problem solved. Washers cost 1.50 from stealers. I also asked for advice on oil for my '89 300d, they advised against mobile 1 but suggested the oil they use at 12.60per litre, no thanks!

Thanks for the excellant advice, next job is for garage though, after replacing chain tensioner the tickover is still sounding like loud rattly chain in there, like the sound of most big old diesels but louder, im thinking perhaps tensioner rails and/or worn sprockets or chain, although im told chains should be good for 500,000 so i would've thought same for sprockets? Doing an oilchange tomorrow so wondering if that will help any.

I spoke to soon! the injector is leaking out jets again, soot mark is bigger on inner bonnet, i can actually see where ite comming from now, at the base of the injector where it meets the engine, where there is a black residue forming on one side. I tried to tighten up a bit but thats not the prob. Would this be a spent injector, strange how the new washer fixed for a couple of days?

You're going to have to take that injector out again, and examine the injector and the cylinder head where the copper washer sits. The washer itself may tell you something about where and why its not sealing correctly.

The copper washer will need a smooth and square surface to sit against. Any pitting or surface erosion is going to be a problem.

@ Uncle Benz.." who says Mercs are expensive to run?" ME!! I have just been quoted 500 quid to replace the injector seals on my A class (W reg) after 47k miles, if this isnt expensive... what is!!! oh and a replacement gearbox is required as well at £1169 plus fitting and vat.

Yours wouldnt be a company car would it?

I am sorry if you missed the sarcasm in my comment.

In answer to your question, none of my cars are company owned. They are all mine and so are the repair costs. I own a small motor repair shop, and so labour comes cheap, but parts are Merc retail minus ten percent. Even so, I spent over £1300 on my C32 in January. Interestingly several things started to play up just as the warranty expired.....

Uncle Benz, my faith is in you!
In the last few years i've found a little passtime/hobbie or even somtimes earner, but when you calculate hours spent on, it's really just a passtime. This big old merc is really the best i've had to date as far as challenges (and of coarse the MERC's driving experiance) are concerned. I'm on a very limit'd budget, holidays seem to come first! but this car really is a revelation, i like the old bm 520's love all the audi 80's right down to vw's old polo! But this old babe is differant class! and costing me nowt, well, so far! But anyone knows that any car badly maintained will cost a fortune to put right, old or newer. Iv'e had friends ask me ' why ' but i love driving this car, that's why! I've got the rear discs and pads, all filters, oil, chain tensioner, engine mounts for 135 quid! online from gsf. Ok if i went to garage and asked them to sort all out, well, i wouldn't even be on this forum. Anyway, when i get this car running as i want her, i feel there is every chance she's on my drive to stay! I'll just have to find the other half a run of the mill A to B car.
