Hi,

Just picked up my SL320 1997 today. It is fitted with 18" AMG Alloys. I never discovered till 6pm that there were no lockable nuts on these and Ins Co shall not cover the AMG wheels. Never even contemplated that the wheels would not be protected. Rushed down to Halfords with an actual nut, however they had nothing to suit for their range.

I am nervous about leaving my car in the drive tonight and would like to get sorted tomorrow ASAP.

Does anyone know if I need to go to a Merc dealer to get some lockable wheel nuts? or do you think they can be obtained from any other source?

Need to get this sorted tomorrow one way or another any advice appreciated.

These bolts ony come from MB If you have the long ones they are not made anymore,so that only leaves the short version, the same goes for the other bolts. They are 12mm.
get those for now as you have no choice, And the originals do come up on Ebay from time to time.

Locking wheel nuts won't stop anyone stealing your wheels, but if it makes the insurance company happy then so be it.

eBay usually has a selection though a dealer will be your best bet.

Thanks Television,

I have the bolt here.
The thread is 21mm long.
The thread plus the continued section to the start of the nut is 40mm, if you know what i mean.
The total length of the bolt overall is 70mm.

Will a 12mm thread actually do?

12mm may be the thread diameter - not the length of the thread.

One of the reasons I assumed it was the length was that in Halfords all of the McGuires range were much shorter in length.

You cant really use other bolts as the profile of the taper on the MB bolts is not the same.

As I said you cant buy the 70mm long bolts now, and the new MB replacement does not have the exstention to bring the head out level with the face of the wheel.

A thread length less than 12mm? That's verging on ridiculous. I have Mercedes locking nuts on my car - they were standard fitment and are the same length as the rest of the bolts - 22mm thread - 40mm to taper and overall length 60mm (the locking cap makes it slightly longer).

Dont you have 14mm bolts stats on your car.MB went over to them in 2000.

No; as you know R129s took very little of MBs changes in that period.

MB standard fit are McGuard locks. They are allegedly the best you can get and will deter all but the pros. After a lot of research into the 'best' locks, a friend bought some for a Passat from a local after market place. Had to them but they make for all cars. Or the dealer should be able to supply.
I'd fit them, they may not be perfect but neither is a 5 lever mortice. Would you leave your front door open all night?

are these any good to you

Genuine Mercedes Locking Wheel bolt set
Brand new, NEVER used, one bolt only tried on my car, the packaging was only opened for me to do that and I only tried it on finger-tight.
I bought them for my SL, but they stand a bit too proud on my non-standard five spoke alloys. They do have the long shank, and might fit 15 hole flat face types on a 107 SL which use longer bolts

Dimensions are :-
Thread pitch 1.5 mm, diameter 12.5 mm.
Lenght of threaded portion =20mm, length of shank from start of thread to bottom of rounded shoulder/seat =44mm, length of shank from top of shoulder /seat to head of bolt =35 mm. overall length is 84mm

Part number B6 6 40 8238
For W124 E-Class
NOTE , MB literature states these bolts are ONLY compatible with the following wheels :
8 hole 7 x 16 ET46 - part number B6 6 47 0069
&
8 Hole 7 x 16 ET 46 (high Sheen) - B6 6 47 0087
but you should check your own bolts and see if these will do the trick

If push comes to shove, you can always have the shank machined with a thread higher up its reach, and trim some length from the threaded bit.

These must be the best on offer today,as the new ones are so short it would look as though one bolt was missing.

Myros,

Thanks for the reply. I need to look at a couple of local options first. Friend of a friend works in Derwent (Main Dealer), he shall come back to me by tomorrow and he can get a discount.

Also I contacted John Weir(main dealer) in Grangemouth. My car was serviced there for 7 years, so they know the car. They say they have a set avaliable in stock. Price inc VAT was £52.

Again bearing in mind the previous comments here I need to make sure what ever option I go for actually fits. I shall need to do something by end tomorrow as I could not stand another night with car in drive like this.

if the MB your friend sources are the same as my MB ones, you are in for a saving. I only paid £30 for mine, and that's all I'd want from you plus the p&p

All,

Job done! Got set today from Merc dealer and fitted tonight. The studs were so tight on the car I don't think it needed lockables!!!

£58.50 for the set, however I am more at ease with these on.

Thanks for help all.
