2001 CLK 320 Convertible
Hi guys.

Hope you're all well. OK this is quite embarrassing. I’ve had a 2001 CLK convertible for a few months now and love it to bits. The only problem I’ve got is I can’t lock the boot! When I hit the remote lock, everything locks, apart from the boot. If you try and open the boot after it’s alarmed, the alarm will go off, but it still lets you open it – long enough for someone to help themselves and leg it!

Am I missing something? The key doesn’t seem to do it, so I’m guessing there should be a switch somewhere, or should it all be done from the remote?

Thanks in advance.

Shaun

Hi Malcolm

Thanks for the prompt reply again. I'll have a looky and maybe get someone to take a peek. In the meantime, I won't be keeping my rare collection of Rolex watches in the boot me thinks! ;-)

All the best

Hi,
I,m sure that the lock actually has 3 positions, locked all the time, lock/unlock with the central-locking, and unlocked all the time, does your key blade still operate the lock? or has it seized like a lot of other MB's (both my cars included).
I think yours could just be in the unlocked all the time position.

Hi Andy

Apologies for the ignorance, how do I check whether it's in a locked all the time position? Is there a switch somewhere? The key blade doesn't seem to even fit into the key hole?

Many thanks

The key will not fit because of the dirt in the lock, you will need to spray lubricant liberally into the lock & free it. Also, does a 2001 CLK have a vacuum system? I know my 2005 is electronic central locking.

I,ll be completely honest I,m not sure, and to be honest I,m only remembering something I have read years ago, have a look in your owners handbook it might be in there that I read it for mine, but one thing I do remember is it is all to do with the position you leave the lock when you remove the key, the positions are key slot vertical, key slot horizontal and key slot vertical 180 degrees from the other position, try turning the lock from its position now to the other positions and see if it makes a difference, if no difference then you will have to do further investigation into the mechanism.
Does your key turn freely in the lock?
Have you got a boot release button on the centre console and button on the remote for opening the boot? Does it work? As this could be an indication onto what is wrong.

There are 2 positions that I know of Andy, there is with the key fully fully turned to the right, this is a locked all of the time, position, turned to the left it opens with the locking

As far as I can see you have two faults.

1… the boot should lock with the remote, as it doesn’t, then it must be an issue with the vacuum line at the boot lock.

2…as has been said the key doesn’t enter or work in the lock because it is seized due to infrequent use.

With penetrating oil, push the aerosol straw into the lock and spray for 5 seconds, repeat every 10 minutes, the idea being to flood the internals of the lock.
Have the boot lid in the fully open position so that the lock is vertical, this will allow the oil to seep down into all of the lock.

Get a ladies hairpin and open it out and push one end in and out of the lock to aid freeing the seized levers in the lock barrel, then try inserting the key and work it, in and out and from side to side.

It may take several hours, even days, to free the lock but it will work eventually.

As an example see… http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=48327

Look for a yellow plastic pipe around the hinge area in the boot. this controls the locking & has probably split with movement of the hinge over the years. Think it's driver's side but cant be sure. You can repair it with some general vacuum pipe for inlet manifolds/carburettors etc. There is no "permantly unlocked" position for the boot. Do as DEC says & try to free it off but this wont cure the locking problem.

Apologies for the delay - broadband problems!

The key does now fit into the lock and you can turn it to the left and the right, but neither seems to click or physically lock it. It has a console boot opener and this happily opens it up and also the remote opens it up, but alas no lock. Perhaps I should buy a rottweiler and keep it in the boot! ;-)

Cheers

I'll give it a good blast with some WD40 and see if it moves any further, but it does seem to go fully to the left and right?

It is possible that something has broken,,there are no spare parts, only a complete lock. I can find some info on how to remove it all from the car

A quick update on this one. When I bought the car, it came with two key fobs. The one I used to use (when I posted this originally) would lock everything bar the boot. The other fob, which is now my main one, locks everything, including the boot! Hit the lock button and it locks the lot, hit the unlock button once, it unlocks everything, apart from the passenger door, click it twice and it unlocks everything - including the passenger door.

So I guess problem solved, unless I ever lose this fob and have to go back to the original!!

Cheers

Shaun
