Just thinking about the major components of my W220.... It just turned 120,000 miles and still seems to drive as good as new.

My question relates to the auto box on these cars and its realistic potential lifespan. My indi has recommended a fluid and filter change every 20 - 25K miles just to keep it in top condition now that its getting on a bit!

What do we think of this approach and what experiences have people got of this box in terms of mileage?

Any other maintenance tips would be also be appreciated!

Your mechanic is right though I'd probably stretch it to 40k which is now MBs recommended range. Other than that, ensure the electrical plug seal is still doing its job.

40 to 50 K should be OK for the box, there is not much that you can do to prolong the life as its always in the right gear at the right time, in general I do not belt my cars up to the max very often and just keep it running light, someone new of a 722.6 box reaching 400k and still going

That very car you are talking about Malc was a 210 320cdi, last time i see it was showing 476000 miles, only time it let him down was when the battery failed, still not bad at 7 years old and that milage!!

Amazing mileage!

I also dont thrash my car, and its driven mainly on nice longish motorway runs. What made me think about this was my journey home yesterday. I was stuck on the M25 for over an hour and I was wondering how the constant stop and start traffic driving might effect the transmission.

I have had the power cable plug changed and a fluid and filter change only 5K miles ago so all should be well for a while!

And the car is going in for a service next month.

This is my first post, and I must say what a first class site this is.

I've a w210 with a 722.626 gearbox (110,000 miles) and have had no problems. As others have mentioned the electronic plug leaks, and mercedes have just launched their 4th mod to replace the previous £3.50 part (new part A203 540 02 53 @ £17.39 + vat), hope they get it right this time!!.

I'm just changing the oil on my gearbox for the first time while it is off the engine, (which i'm rebuilding after two main bearing caps unbolted), and i'll post details on the 3353 oil, if anyone is interested.

Regarding the gearbox, I've just advised Opie Oils that their web site could be giving incorrect advice on gearbox oil specs for the E320 CDI FACELIFT (1999-2001); their advice is the Fuchs Titan 4000, (Which meets MB spec 236.1), but the correct spec for my gearbox is either MB 236.10 or MB 236.12. Hopefully Opie will look into it and revise their advice, if required. Fuchs have checked their data for my model and advise Titan 3353. This is a higher spec with better temperature stability and higher oxidation resistance, thus long life. Fuchs tell me that the Titan 4000 is "totally unsuitable"..

Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, then topped with a little transmission fluid, shaken but not stirred :D;)
