I bought one of my cars from e-bay, I think I got a bargain. From other peoples experience, it can go badly wrong though.

The best bet is to bid on cars that you can go and see. It makes life easier when you have to go and pick it up as well.

I had a look at the car (on e-bay) the guy looks like he is pretty honest as he has made no attempt to hide the flaws.

You could ask the question "are the chrome wheel arch things hiding any rust?"

The paintwork looks pretty good though.

PS where in Wales are you Blobcat?

Carmarthen South West Wales, I thought it said so on the right hand side of the header.

Bought a Ducati 996 off of Ebay, after asking lots of questions, bike very good although I didn't hand over any folding until I had seen it. I know bids are binding and all tha, however if the article is not as described then you have every right to back away. They can leave -ve feedback but if the bike was not right I would have given -ve and said why.
As long as all the paperwork is there you should be ok

Are you proposing to bid without seeing it? A bad idea in my opinion

There are plenty of W124 estates of this vintage all priced around £1000. So there's no excuse for not going to see a few and choosing a good one one that way. Unless the car is hundreds of miles away there's no reason to bid sight unseen. And if it is hundreds of miles away, surely it'd be better to view & buy a local one?

Sorry about that Blobcat i should have looked.
A friend of mine just sold his Norton commando on ebay. It was pick up only.
The winning bidder came from Italy, no feedback in the 2 years he was registered.

Fair play to the guy (wolf) he had it shipped over and everything was rosy.

No Tom I am sure it will go for more than £300, but even with a buy it now price of £695, that is a lot of motor for your money dont you think?

My brother in law may also be interested in the said motor. He has just bought a caravan and reckons his 250d auto struggles to tow it. He says it labours going up shallow inclines, so he was looking for a manual diesel or a larger petrol engined model. Any suggestions?

Hiya Johnny,

Took a look at the ad. Judging from David's feedback, and the time he has put into specifying everything in fine detail about the car, it seems a reasonable prospect.

David also demonstrates his helpfulness in answering another eBayer's question on how to replace his bonnet emblem.

I bought a car, unseen until I collected it, for just £82 (not a Merc) off eBay and it was just as described. Ran it for 6 months with no problems then sold it to my son's mate who had written off his own car. It's still around as far as I know 18 months later.

Just shows that there are bargains to be had, and there are some honest folk about. As you say, for the money you can't lose much, and it does look an honest motor.

If you've got a good feeling about it I'd go for it.

Good luck with your bidding!

Ron

Ron I agree with you entirely, still not sure if im gonna bid on it cos my 200te is serving me well at the moment. But my brother in law is interested so we will see what happens. Like you say he seems a genuine guy.

A 250TD struggles up shallow inclines even without a caravan in tow! It's not the right car for towing

Didnt make me sweat at all. My brother in law was gonna have it anyway, but he said £625 was his max bid so no one got disapointed.
Anyway since then I have bought 600 roof tiles for £62 which i think is a bargain, and am looking to buy a Bridgeport milling machine in the next hour.
Best regards
John
