I am just strating the search for a CL500 circa 2002/2004 (budget constraints) can anyone offer an insight on the past history I have,
I had bought 18 months back (in haste I admit!) a 00W reg 600CL with a misfire I got in the first week, then spotted corrosion on one door one wing and an arch finally a faulty cluster, final insult came when the incredible Bose system lost volume on the passenger side!
The car had all bar the mis-fire and audio fixed under warranty and the work seemed OK, but the mis-fire was slowly ruining the cat's so she had to go!

I loved the car however and know that corrosion is better after roughtly facelift models in 03?????

I am curious about the reliability of the big V8 in the 500 and as I do intermediate servicing on all my cars (BMW V12's amongst others) I do respect good quality engineering so need some insight from anyone who can advise.

Many thanks folks

The 500 engine is a peach and all you really need. Am not aware of major reliability issues. The facelift cars don't have the rad issues and yes the overall quality is much improved.

OT, what is the GT spec your dad has gone for?

Hi Gary,

After my last effort and given I am now doing about 15K per annum I can convince myself of the CL500 but the 600 sadly is going to be for the moment out of reach, also as this one will be a daily car I have a few compromises to agree to with my next car.

Just a few stat's on this daily commute thing
I drive from Ayrshire to my factory two minutes from Glasgow Airport a distance of around 40 miles plus site and customer visits.
a 5.4 litre V12 BMW averaged 21.8 mpg on the rolling OBC
a 5.7 litre Chrysler 300C did 22.4 mpg similarly
a 2.3 litre Saab 9-5 Aero (250) 27.6 mpg similarly

And I thought the Saab would be a small economy runaround,,,,,,,,

The early CL had a problem catching fire, corrosions was an issue becasue many panels are alloy so a small chip in the paint can cause terrible corrosion, remember the classis range rovers the panels on them where alloy!!! but not the bonnet or tailgates.

The 500 is a good engine, not sure about the 12 but on long cruises the shut down 6 cylinders not sure if the 500 does that to 4 cylinders.

Nows the the to buy saw one the other day £8999 with 58k on the clock.
