If the engine stops you'll lose power assistance to the brakes & steering though not immediately. It's extremely difficult to stop a diesel engine once running so I'd consider very carefully what happened and then find the fault from there

It sounds electrical but that should not have stopped the engine

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Failure of the fuel cutoff switch perhaps, or the electrical supply to it?

There's no electrical supply to the fuel cut-off switch as it's penumatic

Unless there's an electrical shutoff valve in the fuel feed I don't see how you can stop a running diesel W124 with an electrical fault

This is like a whodunnit...

This might sound silly, but you don't have a heavy key ring do you? If I remember rightly your car has one of those fold out key fobs. There has been a post by another forum member whereby his ML would do this at random. He found that the weight of keys on his keyring was folding the keyfob and withdrawing the key from the ignition switch.

There's your fault then, as Tv said. Ignition switch.

I still don't see how you nearly lost control of the car, you just lost engine power and steering assistance, which you don't need or get on the motorway anyway.

If the key you put in does not go past the srs light.

Sounds like you have a faulty ignition lock mechanism.
