My 2013 250 CDI 65k smoking badly when given some stick, just had DPF power cleaned and new fuel rail sensor fitted as was shown up on diagnostics but limp mode and engine warning light now gone but very smoky.
I’m no engineer so please be gentle with me

Lots of black smoke on a diesel engine often points to a split or blown off hose from the turbocharger.
That's the first place I'd check.

Are you saying it's only smokey since the DPF clean and RP sensor change? Or it was smokey before?

I'd agree there. Stuck EGR valve can also contribute.

No smoke before DPF clean, car has been on Star, Snap on and icarsoft diagnostics and doesn’t show anything

Don't believe in coincidences, so if was OK before clean and not after, you have to question that cleaning.
Smoke means different things to different people, but if sooty and leaving soot deposits in tailpipe, DPF sounds to be compromised, ie cracked.

There's obviously more of a backstory if you if you had the RP sensor replaced and you needed to have the DPF power cleaned (which sounds ominous).

Yes I agree it does sound ominous, do you think that the power clean has done some damage or could it be that by cleaning it it has cleaned out a crack that was already there?
Out of interest anybody got idea how much a new DPF might be?

It’s also strange that no faults shown on diagnostics and no engine management light on

Even a broken/faulty DPF won't cause copious black smoke from exhaust. More to it than dpf in my book. When my 270 had a stuck egr, copious smoke under acceleration and NO EML. A split hose will only signal EML when leak is substantial enough. I'd still check the simple things first.

Booked in with another garage on Tuesday so hopefully not going to be a new DPF or anything expensive.
Thanks for all your help and advice, I will keep you all posted on outcome.

You still haven't said what led you to change the RP sensor and get the DPF cleaned. RP sensor is an unusual failure and DPFs don't need cleaning if everything is functioning correctly.

DPF what? If it suggested soot load was too high, cleaning fixes the symptom not the cause. As oigle says, something must be causing it to get blocked.

Additionally, a DPF equipped car should have 0 smoke at all. If you have visible smoke the DPF is broken (has a straight path through) or they have not fitted it properly causing an exhaust leak.

The smoke you see now is likely what blocked the DPF in the first place, fix that faukt, then fix the DPF.
