Right, having dealt with most problems, seroius and otherwise, I now have an interesting situation. 123 223, 160k miles, auto box. Twice now after a long journey sitting at 90mph as I come to a reasonably quick stop at a roundabout I get loads of smoke. It looks like oil smoke althougth the car does not appear to use any. I cant find any leaks that may be dripping onto the exhaust. The car does not cut out and the engine is not overly hot between 80-100 deg C. I mean loads of smoke, first time I paniced and pulled straight onto the verge, stopped and looked. could not find a thing. I then tried the same thing again, but slowing down to 70mph for 4-5 miles before offramp. No smoke. It seems to dissapear very quickly as by the time I have stopped the car safely and got out there is no evidence of where it all came from.Ideas anyone? .

Looking at the mileage, i would say you have at least valve guide oil seal problems, and most probably the guides and valves are worn as well.

So having slowed down to warp 1, no problems eh!

I have to agree with Dave, sounds like valve stem seals.

I bet the last time you slowed down so quick was when the ole blue lights were flashing in the rear view mirror.

By the sounds of it though. You could loose them in a smoke screen while accelerating away he he.

You can fit seals and try it. Then guides later if you want. The seals can be fitted in situ if you know what you are doing and have the tools. If this cures it. Then ok. But it will probably need guides. But with a care of this age I would stick a set of seals on first.

Lotsa Smoke

Come on Guys, she is an old girl, it takes a week to get to 90 and once she is there, I really hate to interfere with progress. However, I will try seals first. Milage is high, but she has been in the family since new and well maintained. I will get her to Concourse condition but only if she can sit at 90 without smoke.
