Hopped in the car this morning and selected reverse to back out of the drive and there was a big clunk and a slight lurch, so back to neutral and I was unable to go to D or P without turning off the engine. The engine light also came on and stays on.

I decided to risk a quick trip round the block and noticed it stays in low gear and the indicator showing what mode (W or S) is blank.

Engine sounds perfect. Any ideas?

What car have you got? Could be a board or gear selector fault. I’d say selector but get it read to confirm.

Just did a gearbox reset and test drive and everything smoother now and the display is correct, however it wont go into first but the other changes seem OK.

Booked for an MOT on Monday at a local specialist and he says he will stick it on Star. Meanwhile, of course, all my plans have gone awry.

Turned out to be a gearchange control module. Had a re-conditioned one fitted and all seems OK.
