Hi,

just had my ML270 back from repairs (cosmetic only) where new Winbo side bars have been fitted to replace the old scratched ones. Since then the car makes very loud creaking metallic noises on rear/centre left and front/centre right when cornering in respective directions.

The repair centre that fitted the bars had the car in for a check and claims that the fitting is good, the problem must be with suspension. I have since had the car MOTd and serviced - no problems reported.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Could it be the bars or is there a deeper problem with suspension that can't be picked up without a proper investigation?

Thanks in advance,
Albert

Am experiencing the same problem as you when turning the steering wheel. A guy told me that it is a common problem with Mercs. He said that the problem could be coming from the suspension and asked me to get it checked out immediately since my car is still under warranty. He said that it is the rubber bars in between the suspension that cause such creaking noises when turning the steering wheel. The noise usually comes at a low speed like turning in a round about or driving into a parking space.

When i hold the steering wheel turned all the way to the left or right, this creaking noise persists. Alternative measures - Check the power steering fluid level. What you can do is reach in through the wheel well and place your hand on the different parts while someone bounces the car up and down. When you found the part that's creaking, you will feel it. Now be careful where you put your hand so you don't get hurt. Spraying all the rubber parts under the car generously with Liquid. It may take three or four applications to do it. If, after that, the creaking is still there, you'll have to replace the offending struts. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks to all for your replies. Does your noise come from inside the car or is it more audible from the outside with the windows down? Mine s definitely coming from the outside, which made me think it was the side bars tensing while cornering. If cornering gently with the steering wheel fully locked, all nice and quiet. It's the centrifugal force that makes it go.
