Loud rumbling noise ML320 2007

I am new to the forum and was hoping someone may be able to help me to diagnose what issue I have with my 2007 ML320 CDI (80,000 miles).

On idle it has started making a loud ticking/rattling noise and while driving makes a whining noise from 2,000+ revs.

It already has a known issue with the glow plugs (the plugs have all been replaced but it still struggles to start with a puff of white from the exhaust), but I don't think the two are related.

Sounds like an exhaust heatshield loose.

Thanks. Will take a look and see if i can find the culprit.

Sadly, it turned out that the turbo intake had cracked (most likely when a garage took the engine to pieces to remove a broken glow plug) and some had been sucked into the turbo. :-(

Given what else they discovered was wrong with it, and the associated potential £4K bill, I have decided to get rid of it.

Shame, it was almost immaculate inside and had a great spec and mileage.
