Hello lovely people:)
My first time posting a question!
Please some one tell me what to do.

My beloved SL600 (2006, 50,000 miles) has a problem.
After a few miles of driving it I hear an unusual whistle sound which I can only assume to be the turbo.
After a few miles more, the car feels like it is in neutral gear with no transmission! Only loud turbo whistle. When I turn the engine off then on, the problem temporarily goes away for about 10 mins.
This happened a week ago and only today the engine check light came on.

Is this a big problem?

Sounds like a boost leak somewhere. You need to get the codes read on a decent code reader.
Thanks ever so much. I hope this is the case, anything else could be extremely costly! I will update tomorrow after I take it to a decent garage.

If you were a CHAV, you'd love it!! Hope you get it sorted!
I'll tell you a secret, I loved the sound for about 10 minutes, then it started to very much irritate me. The whole reason why I bought the SL600 over the SL55 is the quietness of the engine! I need to stick to that plan:)

Sorry guys, I made a mistake in the problem description I think!

It seems like the noise was from the bottom of the car I.e. gear box.

The diagnostics show that there is slippage in 1st and second gear. I hope this is not costly. It could be and ECU thing?

Would my next move be taking it to a gear box specialist?

I'd get a specialist to look at it. Some of those errors are historical some not.
It may be a speed sensor on the conductor plate or it could be a worn clutch pack

It will cost less at an MB specialist , whatever it is

that could just need a oil change in the box , has it been done lately ?
Thanks for this. Never been done before (50,000 miles).
I will purge the oil and filter first. Fingers crossed, the gear slippage would go away. I will update :)

600 & 65’s are known for eating the clutch packs, especially K3 iirc
Thanks Matty. I really hope it's just the clutch kit. What is K3 iirc?

Dealerships do charge more, most of us you Mercedes independent specialists, they tend to have all the kit of dealers but they also tend to be more considerate and get to a root cause of an issue over just throwing parts at something to fix.

K3 is one of the clutch packs and friction plates, iirc is just an abbreviation of If I Recall Correctly.
K3 is used between 3rd and 4th gear and 6th and 7th but it gets a lot of punishment on 3-4 where most people will be using the effortless power from the V12, so it tends to be 1st to go.

Thanks matty. My gearbox is only the older 5 speed. Plus the diagnostic say it's 1st and 2nd gear where the slipping occurs. I will take in a specialist tomorrow. All will be revealed! Thanks mate:))

Ah okay, didn’t notice the age of the car, likely still the same but if your seeing slipping then your going to be best doing a gearbox rebuild, it will only get worse, fitting a new clutch pack now and friction plate it’s likely just going to need doing again soon, if the car is a keeper then may as well spend the money now and know it’s going to be good for many years to come.

Thanks matty. The slipping only starts after half an hour of driving. Would a rebuild be cheaper than a complete replacement (used)?
