Trying to find out which are the correct lubricants for my car is like trying to get blood out of a stone!!!!
Not even the guys at the local dealership are focused enough to make enquiries. The general response is a good old shrug of the shoulders.
I know its a boring subject but it is also a very important one. Use the wrong lubricant and things soon become very intresting, when trying to raise the capital needed to replace a major part that has failed because an incorrect lubricant had been used.
So here are the details of my vehicle and if anyone can help then i will remember you in my prayers! :D
E300 turbodiesel, W210 chassis, 1998, auto.
Gearbox fluid??? What type do i need
Differential oil??? Again what type is needed
Engine oil???? Whats the best type for this engine.

Many thanks in advance. :) [/b]

Hello Barnie. :D

Thanks for the information. I note that the info you have supplied has been sourced from a Haynes manual. I did not know that Haynes listed one for the W210 E class Mercedes!!

If you could tell me where you purchased your copy from then maybe i could get one too!! :D

Now all i have to do is find a shop that sells Duckham fluids!!

Many thanks once again.

Hi habiby

If I could add my twopenny worth...

Haynes always specify Duckhams lubricants for some reason which I'm not going to state but you can probably guess why the same as me...

You don't need specifically Duckhams lubricants; any reputable makes of oils will do for the engine and diff. I can't comment on the gearbox because I've never used an auto' box and I know that some auto' boxes have specific oils which must be used.

For the diff. you can use any EP90 oil labelled by Castrol, Unipart, Motorcraft, Duckhams etc or any other well respected manufacturer. I buy mine from the local motor factors.

For engine oil any of the above manufacturers make perfectly good engine oils. As it's a diesel engine in your car, obviously use a diesel oil because it contains detergents which keep the deposits in suspension better than a non-diesel oil; but it must be changed more frequently. I use one made by Vauxhall which I buy in bulk.

The three great secrets to engine/tranmission longevity in order of importance are frequency, frequency and frequency. If you can do the job yourself then change the engine oil and filter every 3000 miles for a diesel and 5000 miles for a petrol. Change the oil in the diff. every 12000 miles. Your gearbox I don't know about but I do mine every 12000 miles when I do the diff. I've got a manual 'box on mine. By sticking to this regime I've so far (touch wood) never had had an engine, gearbox or diff. problem in the cars I've owned and I keep mine a long time. Oils and filters are cheap compared to exchange engines, transmissions and differentials.

Hope this helps.

Oils

Hi Barnie here again!!
Yes I agree the Haynes will be a wee bit antiquated for your car, so I've come up with a site for you to visit, which will solve all your oil problems.
Visit www.castrolauto.com & all will be revealed!!!

Hello Flyingtech 55 :D

I cannot agree with you more when you reveal the secrets to engine/gearbox longevity :D
This has always been my theory because no matter how good a lubricant is, it is never going to last the life of a vehicle. I was always scepticle when i was told by some crazy folk that the gearbox/dif etc etc fluid does not need changing because it is sealed for life!!! :?
At least i am not the only one who thinks that they are bonkers :D

Thanks for the good advice.

Auto Gearbox Fluid

If I can add my 2 sens worth...

If longevity is important to you, I suggest that you use original MB auto gearbox fluid. I find that it gives the best shift quality, and is specified by MB specifically for their gearboxes.

Do a search on this (and other forums) and you will find lots of detailed (and not so detailed) discussions about MB auto boxes, and their care and maintenance.

And I whole-heartedly agree with the point made about regularity of fluid/oil changes.
