finally took the plunge and have acquired a sl 55 on a 03 plate, dealer to there credit spent a fair bit of money putting it on the road new discs, brakes, 2 batteries, ABC pump, air con compressor. it appears to be water tight in the usual problem areas, the heater isn't working and after trawling the internet I suspect this could be down to the m16/32 heater duo valve situated just under the right hand windscreen wiper. does anyone no were I can source this part ?

Get one from the main dealer. They are approximately £35 but a pig to fit.
The Part number is A230 830 00 84 and known as a change over valve.
Personally, I'd find a local Mercedes independant specialist and get them to fit it.
