Travelled from Haydock down to past Birmingham and back yesterday. NEVER seen so many miles of coned off M6 with 50 mph limits in my 30 odd years of motoring. Most of the work seemed to be aimed at the hard shoulder and embankment. What are they doing ?
I also thought the idea of the 50 limit was to 1. protect the work force. What workforce, their wasn't a soul to be seen and 2. to prevent accidents in contraflows. These works where all just a case of narrowing 3 lanes down with no contraflows. Surely people can drive in a straight line at 70 mph with a foot less on either side ?:(

The M6 around junction 10 is being widened currently to allow the use of the hard shoulder as an extra lane when busy (In much the same way as the M42.) I know-I live nearby.....

30 vehicle miles

I travelled north on the M6 recently to the gtg at Peebles - 24th October.

As I went north, I noted gantry signs warning of delays between junctions 29 and 34! Sure enough, when I got there, I was not disappointed. I spent an hour in the queue and finally got to some bridgeworks in the central reservation - but no activity. Usual story, hundreds of mute cones supervising empty carriageways.

Just after that I visited the next service area for a "comfort break" - you can never be too careful. There was no room in the car park and a queue waiting to enter it, so I became a lorry and parked elsewhere.

When I got into the service area, it was like a refugee camp, thronging with all those who had built up a full bladder whilst queuing. The queue for the ladies lavatory was about 200 yards long!

Is the UK a first world country?

On my way south on the morning of Monday 26th, I measured the northbound queue - 10 miles of stationary traffic, 3 lanes wide - 30 vehicle miles!

If the civil engineers involved in this fiasco had been in charge during WW2, we would still be waiting for an outcome.

Ahhh .... the good old return from work journey I make every day. Such a joy... especially on a Friday when there will be delays caused by no less than 2 upsidedown caravans, and thousands of idiots slowing down to have a good look.

We are constantly told that a congestion charge must be introduced as the only way of fighting the congestion. Yet who or what is causing so much congestion- answer, the Utility companies and the P poor engineers who are incapable of co ordinating our road works.

So fitting an axle and a set of wheel s to the roof of a caravan would alleviate that problem...

You'd think by now that most of the drivers on our roads would have seen an upside down caravan before . However, it seems not by the sheer number of rubber neckers who have to slow down to drink it all in when ever the happen across one.

I was up and down that section of the M6 yesterday, M62, M6, M5 & M50, 360 miles in 5.5hrs or 65mph average & >42mpg. Which considering I didn't go faster than 73 is pretty decent.
I hope you weren't the S210 who braked for the average camera as if it was a gatso then sped off at ~70 until the next one. I know it is a pain cones with no action however the average cameras do tend to keep the traffic flowing. My TMC let me know there was an accident there last Friday so I did the M1 instead, ~25 miles of 50mph average on the M1.

It's incredibly annoying to be held up like this when there is no necessity. Of course it's all part of the ongoing "education" of the populace into being slowed and controlled - there'll be plenty more to come.

Did glasses for a civil engineer (who was quite civil, actually) and he claimed that the works on the M25 are to install average speed cameras around the whole circuit. And the new cameras are not fooled by simply changing lanes. Uh-oh!

He also recons that it's only a matter of time before the government will charge you for each mile of motorway you drive on as the ANPR cameras are that reliable and they can cross reference the information with mobile phone signals! BIG BROTHER!!

Welcome to my working week ............. I travel all over the UK for meetings .... I love it when I go through the tunnel, and enter a proper socialist country or 2 .... the roads are heaven !
